In the Midst of Human Debris and Fallen Wands, Here Comes the Cavalry
Harry, Snape, balloons, 122 words
The dawn is orange on purple and Snape's red blood bleeds through Harry's fingers. The air is cold but the blood is warm and Harry holds Snape's chest together.
Snape grips Harry's elbow with sharp intensity and there are tears in Harry's eyes. He shakes his head as Snape tries to speak. Harry doesn't want to hear it. He knows now. He knows.
Snape's black eyes stare at him and then past him. Blood gurgles from Snape's mouth and Harry presses the halves of Snape's chest together harder.
The grip on Harry's elbow increases and Snape's eyes flicker back to Harry and past him again. Harry turns slowly and his eyes widen.
He can see balloons, giant balloons rising in the air.

Never Change
Gog and Magog, laughter, 106 words
They've stood on guard since they were made: two statues, straight, tall, matching, a set, a pair. They've stood on guard, with fireplaces their territory.
They first stood guard in a cottage that changed as time passed. Laughter was frequent, and then as the girls became women the laughter stopped. They stood on their guard ever watchful as their charges changed from girls to knitting old women and then one day a red-haired girl came, and their charges changed again.
Now they stand guard in a house, large and airy and their fireplace burns brightly. The red-haired girl is now a woman, but the laughter stays.
