I think that's a question that's on a lot of people's minds. I heard a preacher on t.v. the other day declaring it the "judgement of God." I've gotta say, though... I think that's hardly true. God was looking for a reson to spare Soddom and Gomorrah from the impending natural disaster -- he wasn't seeking to destroy them. Abraham even begged God to spare everyone (even the evil people) for the sake of the righteous. God said that for the sake of 10 righteous he would not destroy it (see Genesis 18:20-33). However, nobody payed any attention to the warnings aside from Abraham's family. A friend of mine started a church in New Orleans a few years ago - right in the heart of a high-crime, "sinful" part of town. Hundreds of people came to know Christ there. It seemed the message of Christ was just beginning to spread like wildfire when the hurricane wiped out the city. So I don't think that for a moment God looked at New Orleans and the gulf coast and cast judgement on these people. If that were the case, then the rest of the world would really be screwed! There's immorality and sinfulness everywhere. Natural disasters and that kind of suffering is something I can't explain and I never will be able to understand why it happens... The only thing I do know is that God isn't "out to get us." He's too full of love for that sort of thing. :)
