[Charlotte is not having the smoothest of days, which is as far as she'll let herself take that line of thought--she's trying not to dwell on things so much. All it means is that what she wants, more than anything, is to be home, trying to eat something with her tea and maybe even succeeding ( Read more... )

Do you want the long version or the short version?

I don't think the long one could hurt, at least for a change--as long as you don't mind?

To be fair, the long version kind of starts with the short version. You're in a place called the City, unoriginal in name only, really.

The...architecture is certainly a jumble, although it's kind of charming. I like the carousel.

It's more than just the architecture that's a jumble, and the carousel's nice and all, but...

Wait, has anyone sent you one of the guides yet?

A woman named Anna did, but I have to admit I've only skimmed it so far, it's a lot to take in.

I should introduce myself--Charlotte Janvier, or Philomena Poorwillow, whichever one of those seems the least silly to you.

Well, I've been here for two years now, so if you've got any questions, I should be able to answer them. Maybe. I'm not gonna make any promises just in case.

You have two names?

I'm going to think of some, but first I should probably--

This is going to sound...I think only as weird as 'being abducted by a magical City' sounds, so I might as well just say it--yes, I have two names, it's because I have two...me's. One of them is human, and that's Charlotte, and one of them is a fairy, and that's Philomena, and I'm really not crazy even if that...does sound that way. It's not that I have two personalities, it's like--having dual citizenship in two countries, that's the best metaphor I have.

Some fairy I am, with a creative mind like that. So, there you go, more of an explanation that you probably wanted or needed. At least even if you have a very silly name you'll know I can't judge it, even though I wouldn't anyway.

[Pause.]

I tried to get my name changed to something more hilarious - like Princess Ariel McGoozer Muffin - but my parents were pretty adamant about making sure it stayed Claire Bennet. I mean, I probably could have two if I really wanted, but I don't think it's really the same as what you're talking about.

Philomena's pretty, but I guess I have to ask... which one would you normally go by?

[Charlotte laughs, quietly, sounding just a little bit embarrassed.]

It's nice to meet you, Claire Bennet. Two names just result in--well, this kind of situation, so I don't know if it's a good idea except where you absolutely have to do it.

With people who aren't also of the dual-nature persuasion? Charlotte, it's just--less of a mouthful.

Charlotte it is then. Not that Charlotte isn't a pretty name either. Not that actually matters whether you have a pretty name or not. It's not like we have a club or anything.

[And another pause, as Claire bites at her lip.]

So you're... a fairy?

Claire and Charlotte? I think we could, if we wanted, our parents were very thoughtful about our names that way. And yes, um--

[There's a brief rustle of cloth on her end and an incredibly quiet little cough.]

A changeling, very technically--that just means that I'm human too. And the kind of fairy I am is a sluagh. All that means is that I'm quiet, in case you were wondering if I just have a terrible head cold, or something.

[She had picked up on that quietness, and tries to sound warm in response.]

I'll put the cough drops back on the shelf, then. [Claire does laugh slightly at her own attempt to make a joke, but it doesn't last.] Are you quiet because... being a sluagh - [The pronunciation tries to match Charlotte's but doesn't work as easily.] - means that you have to be quiet or are you quiet to try and take attention away from the fact?

[ooc: sob I am not quite sure where my brain is tonight which I THINK means I should try for bed. Sorry for my slow!]

I have to be quiet, but I don't mind it--it's just one of those odd little quirks that come with it, apparently like just going on and on about myself instead of trying to get to know you better. [Charlotte keeps sounding light after laughing softly at the cough drops comment; she's not hard to charm, and she certainly doesn't expect anyone to pronounce Gaelic the first time correctly because she's not...insane. Oh, Gaelic, you language.]

You've been living here for two years, do you mind if I ask how you like it? You seem sane and--well, sane, that's just reassuring.

[ooc: Oh, sleep, that seems like such a good idea >_> no apologies! Humans: our brains are squishy, and also no slowness is detectable.]

You aren't going on and on that much. Besides, it's interesting, at least. I'm pretty boring.

[Charlotte, if you only knew how low-key crazy this particular girl is you might be rethinking that club. There is the verbal equivalent of a shrug.]

It's not bad. There are certain things about it that suck - the curses, and the things the deities put us through just because they need a blood donation or something equally asinine - and there are certain things that are scary, whether by deity design or just because people are... people. But overall... I don't know. I like it here. You don't have to worry about some of the things that you might, depending on where you come from, and I've met people here I'd never get to at home.

No one is boring, at least not to me--that and 'Princess Ariel McGoozer Muffin', please, I wasn't even that creative in my prime.

[It seems like Charlotte is...crazy enough herself to not mind the idea of being here, so there's that. We're all mad here. *_*]

It doesn't sound too far from where I come from, honestly, and...I'm sure it can't be that hard to manage, all in all, so thank you for being encouraging, it's very kind of you. ...and it's not like it seems we have much choice besides living with it, so we might as well like it, that's a good attitude.
