Hope For The Future

Jan 20, 2009 19:48

As writers, I think we have to appreciate the excellent Inaugural Address we heard today.  While it certainly did not ignore the problems of the present, I believe it was full of hope for the future.  In particular, I think a call for all of us to ignore the differences of the past, many of them only designed to achieve more power for one group or another, and work together as one people, is very much on target.

Now, I say this having lived through a number of presidents from Harry S. Truman through George W. Bush...different parties, different ideologies, some better, more honest, men than others.  And I say this with a distinct preference for the party in power today, because, for me at least, life has always been better under Democratic administrations than under Republicans.  But I think we have to put that aside, because I also think that little or nothing can be accomplished when the objective is reaching power.

The real goal must be the exercise of power.  The real goal must be governance that serves the people, regardless of color or station in life.  The real challenge is to get going, and solve the obvious problems that trouble America today.  I am hopeful, because I think this new administration has widespread support from our people, who have very differing views of what is right and wrong.  I am hopeful because I have seen a true call to action.  I am hopeful because the new administration has not waited, but has already begun the work.  No matter where you stand, America needs your work and support to reclaim its greatness.  I have hope for the future.  I would be happy to share my hope with all of you.
