DDD: 32 - Log with Ferb [Backdated to 25/08]

James was pacing by the front door. Ferb had told him he was coming today and together they'd worked out the lie they were going to tell his parents. But it still worried him. He'd never really lied to his parents before. Usually just withheld the truth. But this was very different so he forced himself to remember the pseudo-truth and wait for the ( Read more... )

The portal had left him a few yards from the house and he simply stared up at it before starting for the front door. He paused a bit before reaching up for the doorbell. It was always a little odd to be back in England without his family, but well...he did miss it every so often.

Even if it was the seventies here.

"I'll get it!" James shouted at his mother when the doorbell rang. This was part of the plan. He can simply say he got an owl from Hogwarts about this happening, hence the nervousness.

"Hey Ferb." He smiled and invited him in. "Remember your cover?" He hoped his mother didn't molly-coddle him before they got to Diagon Alley.

Ferb gives a thumbs up to reassure James that he remembered. He stepped into the house carefully, the last wizard house he had been in had been from sixty years ago. He glanced around, watching some of the pictures move? Well okay that was interesting.

Rebecca walked up to him with a smile. "What's your name, sweetie?"

"Oh, he's called Ferb." James spoke up, automatically speaking for his friend.

Charles peered closely at the boy. "Why is his hair green, son?" But Rebecca elbowed him and hissed. "Shh, he'd probably sensitive about it." James had to bite his lip to keep from laughing.

Thank you, James. He just looks up at Rebecca with a polite stare, hand behind his back. He does have manners.

The reference to his hair makes him look up at it then at James. They wouldn't have to change it here too, would they?

James smiled at his friend. "Ferb's a Muggleborn. I've been asked to take him Diagon Alley." James wanted it said and known even if it was a lie. Just in case.

Rebecca nodded but Charles looked confused. "Isn't there a professor?" That got him a second elbow and a scowl from his wife.

"Ferb lives just around the corner." James explained. "And besides, I am Head Boy." He hoped they bought it.

The younger boy just nodded. James was taking him to Diagon Alley after all and that's what Ferb was answering. He looked as patient as he could, but he knew parents could be rather insistent about where their children were going.

"Well have fun. And be careful in Ollivanders." Rebecca gave him a knowing look. "I assume you're going by Floo Powder."

James nodded. "I can't apparate yet."

Ollivanders? Alright mental note on that before a small glint of confusion passes over his eyes. Floo powder? What in heaven's name was Floo Powder. And apparating also.

James grinned. "It'll all get explained in time."

Rebecca pondered for a moment. "You'd better go first James. Show him how it's done so you're there when he comes out." She smiled and helped her son into the fireplace.

Okay he could work with that. He followed to the fireplace, looking in before anything. It looked like a normal fireplace; but that never meant much when dealing with wizards. He stepped clear and waited for whatever he'd have to do.

Good thing he was decent at paying attention.

James smiled and gave Ferb a 'trust me' nod before taking a hand full of powder and throwing it into the fire.

"DIAGON ALLEY!" He said loudly and in a whoosh of flame, he was gone.

Ferb nods, of course he trusts James! He startled at the whoosh of flame before peering into the fireplace. No smell of burnt flesh, really a good sign, and no sign of James either. Magic...really.

He looked up at Rebecca who gave him a pinch of the powder and instructed him to keep his arms close to his body and speak clearly.

The boy tossed the powder in and after a second called out clearly, "Diagon Alley." He spun for a bit before stepping out of the other fireplace and into James.

James managed to catch him as they emerged in the Leaky Cauldron, grinning. "So how was your first taste of Floo Powder?"

Ferb just coughs up a bit of soot and stares up at James. It was positively wonderful. And only Ferb could convey sarcasm with a simple glint in his eyes.

"Yeah. It's not the best but it's quick and cheap even if it's not painless." He pointed to the back of the pub and headed in that direction.
