Instrumental

Author’s Notes: ‘Instrumental’ to me obviously meant music, but also when I think ‘instrumental’ I think of one of those moments when there are just no words to describe what just happened. All you can do is sit there and think and come to terms with yourself.

Our mother warned us about boys like him. About attractive, smart men who don’t understand the importance of their own pureblood.

The only reason he was even here was because my parents wanted to look ‘popular’ and so invited every pureblooded family they could think of. The Potters were very much rumored to be ‘blood traitors’ as they had never shown up at any of the rallies. Still, it was all just hearsay and since it was unconfirmed, there was no reason to ‘un-invite’ them.

It was customary for the young men of the invited families to ask the host’s daughter or daughters to dance. Bellatrix had been asked by a Lestrange and Andromeda by a Rosier. I was relieved that my first dance was with Lucius Malfoy. As each young heir claimed our dances, the only one who hadn’t moved from his spot was Potter.

I could see his mother whispering at him but he remained stubbornly fixed in his chair. Sirius was seated next to him and encouraging his decision. I glared; he would no doubt be disowned if his attitude didn’t change.

Finally, Potter Sr. approached his son. I couldn’t tell what was being said, but it apparently got through because James stood. I hastily looked away, searching for some kind of distraction. He couldn’t know that I’d been staring.

Sirius looked on as James approached our table. I was closest to his age; we had a few classes together. I looked expectantly at him as he arrived. Our eyes met and there was a fire there that made my heart beat a little faster. There was an attractive quality about the defiance he’d showed in being the very last to ask for a dance. My mother had warned me that it was dangerous to be attracted to such a thing.

I had prepared my answer already, “If I must.” I would say. After all, I couldn’t very well refuse a dance from one of my parents’ guests, could I? I was smoothing my dress and preparing to stand. I would dance beautifully and we would be the center of attention for a short while as this ‘obligatory’ tradition took place.

I braced myself for his question as he opened his mouth. I fixed my face into a neutral expression; I wouldn’t show any sign of interest when he asked me.

“Andromeda?” He said and held his hand out to my sister. She smiled fondly up at him and accepted. I was shell-shocked for a moment and then proceeded to seethe in my seat.

Andromeda and James bowed to one another on the dance floor and I ripped up my napkin under the table.

Bella reached out and nudged my shoulder. There was a smirk and a knowing look. I glared at her hatefully and returned my attention back to my chocolate treats. “Shut up.” I said spitefully and she laughed cruelly. “I didn’t say anything.”
