7 Days of Self-promotion: Day 1

"Something Old"

I went back to the beginning (2011, apparently) for this. I'd been lurking a bit prior, watching the show as a 'regular' viewer, and I was just smitten, even w/o an exposure to fandom. The first fanart I posted here on LJ was for my best girl, monicawoe and her series "Theosis". Monica was really my gateway drug into SPN fandom and I never ( Read more... )

Gosh that was your very first SPN fanart? I remember it well...it's still rather beautiful. I'm going to have to re-read the fic though, before I can remember what it was about.

I don't often look at my older work, fic-wise, but sometimes I am taken by surprise by someone leaving a review and will re-read it to find out what on earth they are talking about. Because of course, I can't blooming remember. My reaction is either a cringe (which in some ways is nice, because I like to think I have improved) or surprise that something is actually not so bad. I wouldn't want to revisit any of it though - it feels like the moment is passed and I am more interested in moving forward.

Art on the other hand is something I do sometimes feel the urge to redraw...

I have too many new ideas that never get realized to revisit old ones, too! So that's another hurdle...

I also started drawing SPN fanart in 2011, and the during the first two years I struggled hard with the style. The boys are too pretty and I couldn't preserve their good looks in art, and I think that's a challenge that kept me drawing and practicing. I can hardly look at my early works, and even some recent works (like the bottom Sam porn), but there is something special in every piece that kept me from deleting them. I know I can never reproduce any of them. They record what I loved about the show, what I was feeling, and what I could do at that time. Looking at them is like looking at old selves. I did rework one piece recently, but that's a rare case. So basically I'm pretty like you, I think :)

You're the second flist person I've stumbled across that began in 2011!

(I just went back and looked at your SPN art tag because there were many I missed. THAT COMIC. Just whoa! You really do inspire me by how brave you are with poses and settings and EVERYTHING!)

That was when everything was so fresh and I had physical energy to match my enthusiasm. Now I'm jaded :(

Enjoying this meme - and yes, I sometimes cringe at my early stuff, but I don't want to edit it. I spent a good couple of years exploring how to write before I wrote anything that I really felt. So it's practice pieces, trying to get voices and moods, and all very short. It is what it is.

Aw, thank you! And my condolences on your mother. *hugs* So tough. My mom is 74 too but has been in blessedly good health. Hang in there...

I don't look back on my old works unless at some point I get this stray comment and then I'm like, Oh yeah I wrote this like years ago.. lol

My first fanfic was in 2007 I believe SPN that is and I read it about a year ago again and it wasn't beta'd (because back then it wasn't as necessary as now) and it really needed a lot of improvement.. My J2 spn_meanttobe has really come a LONG way. So yeah I like those little time capsules just the way they are so that I can gage my evolution through fandom.

I like going back and rereading old fics when someone stumbles on them; one, to eat a slice of humble and pie and two, my memory is so bad, it's kinda like reading some thing new! Heh...

*little secret* I do the exact same thing.. mainly because after I write something I tend to forget what I wrote.. Sometimes I stumble onto a recc for a fic and I go humm sounds interesting, click on it and go; OMG I WROTE THAT...... lol Yep... don't judge me.. ;)
