If you're at all concerned about the Zika virus, and how virulent it could be and you want to do something to nip this disease in the bud, pop over here:
Wait. WHUT?? We as fandom are raising money to spread awareness about ZIKA? I almost just spat my tea all over the keyboard.
When I was on Velociraptor Island, we had dengue fever and chikungunya, both of which have crossed over to the US, I believe. Both mosquito-borne. Both are very serious diseases in a minority of cases. I remember seeing in the ER one colorful case of a full blown panic attack in a student who saw some bumps on his arm and decided it was chikungunya. They're certainly unpleasant. But the vast majority of patients will not bleed from their eyeballs and die. All the prevention methods the comm is listing is awfully familiar from the island
( ... )
I don't know diddly about Zika, to be honest, except what the news reports and how it's effecting the Olympics--some athletes are apparently opting not to go because of the virus--but a friend is running this campaign and really, it's harmless to raise a little money to help squash a bug. You sassy today! ;) (But I totally respect your experiences with these sorts of things. Leveraging a fandom's charitable tendencies to help, in some small way, countries whose medical systems ain't all that great isn't an awful thing, yeah?)
