The Viziers Journal

“Your highness,” intoned the man in funeral black, “the case against the Queen and the Grand Vizier is simple. We contend that they plotted treason, and regicide, and as proof, we bring you the journal of the Vizier, which was seized from his apartments upon his arrest.”

The man paused, and glared at the Vizier. He then continued, “We of the council have read this document, and we would bring to your attention the following sections.”

He proffered a sheaf of papers, which the King, his expression thunderous, accepted and began to read.

23rd July

I saw her today. Her hair was open, and the sunlight was shining off it - it looked as if there were a halo around her head. He was with her, of course, not that he deserves her - the only reason she even pays attention to that lumbering oaf is because he’s the king.

Day after day I make decisions on his behalf, decisions that allow our poor kingdom to survive. And it’s gotten worse, as of late. Ever since they agreed to leave…but no matter. What must be done, will be.

Today they came again - his royal imbecility needs to decide quickly. She is to awaken soon, and it would never do for us to be late.

The King smiled grimly.

“So, my faithful steward. You desire to mould the face of a nation?”

The Vizier stood in silence as the King began to read again.

28th July

Today I was ushered into her private apartments, like a lover on an assignation. Perhaps that was the intent; I suspect she knows more about how I feel than she would want me to know. Perhaps I was to finally get the chance to prove to her just how much more of a man I was than our ‘King; to prove that I was much more fit to rule than he was. I confess that I felt the first faint stirrings of regicide - with her by my side, we could be the greatest King and Queen in the history of our majestic mountains.

As we began to speak, I was alarmed at how closely the conversation followed my train of thought - she asked me if I thought him a wise king, and whether he was capable of choosing the best future for our kingdom. She has been speaking with many community leaders lately, and it seems that they have convinced her to side with the people, rather than with those that rule.

There is a knocking on the door - I shall return to this later.

“This does not surprise me,” said the King, “and although I will sorely regret the loss of so brilliant a counsellor, it is clear that you must die. Take him away.”

As the guards began to march the Vizier out of the court, the King spoke for the last time.

“Before you go, however, I have one last question to ask. Whom would you side with, Nehru or Jinnah?”
