Burn That Bridge

After rk624 turned me on to bradhicks, it became one of those "Oh, this is why I kept not deleting my LJ account all through those exceptionally emo years" journals. I just read his take on the Man getting torched early. I'd heard about it, and thought it was sad, and didn't think much more about it. It had not occurred to me that anyone could think it was funny; it hadn't crossed my mind; it is of course less despicable than, but it is stupid and wrong for the same reason as, a short-bus joke. At a certain level of obviousness, it isn't funny, and when it's a sad outcome for a bunch of people, whatever little humor may be derived from the irony isn't there anymore. You're just some idiot making fun of the LD kids.

If someone wanted to make inappropriate humor about current events, he might at least express the wish that Nifong and Craig could both do a few days in jail, Craig then accusing Nifong of raping him while there. Rape is not funny, and prison rape is not-funny on top of not-funny, but at least one would be trying to trash-talk a hypocrite and a sociopath instead of a peaceful community of giving, creative people, and the humor doesn't totally degrade in the face of humane values like empathy and the desire not to kick people in the teeth for being different.

I'm really not bitter, just surprised.
