Title: Hell-Bound
Fandom: Pillars of the Earth
Character: William Hamleigh
Word Count: 164
Prompt: Man Down
Rating: PG-13
Summary: I own nothing. Spoilers for episodes 5 and 6. Regan tries to comfort her son.

Regan was very worried about her boy. Her son, usually so fiery like his hair, was depressed and distant. Even her bathing him as she had always done did nothing.

“I’m going to burn Mother,” he whispered.
“Nonsense,” Regan cooed gently, rubbing William’s arm. She tried to comfort her son. “You’ve been forgiven my love.”
William knew this is part of what his mother wanted. Without a master builder, construction on the cathedral would stop. Why Mother and the Bishop wanted this to happen, William would never know.

Regan was sitting beside her son, holding his hands and trying in her own sick and twisted way to comfort him. William had been suffering though this ritualized torture since he was young, but even so, every time his mother leaned in to kiss him, or ran a hand down his chest, it never got any easier.

He killed a man and torched a village. His mother touching him like that, he supposed, was a penance.
