So
this does not bode well.
another link for the teal deer crowd - that, my friends, is a link outlining the new bill the president has signed in.
Bigger warning labels (50% of the package!), advertising limited to adult-only facilities, outdoor advertising limited to at least 1,000 feet away from schools and playgrounds... okay, I guess I can see that. Kind of. Seems a little harsh. Joe the Camel will be banned (because kids love cartoon characters!).
No, wait, it gets better. And by better, I mean "wow, are you doubleplusserious right now?"
wait for it...
"Smokers, particularly the younger crowd, will find they can no longer buy cigarettes sweetened by candy flavors or any herb or spices such as strawberry, grape, orange, clove, cinnamon or vanilla. Cigarettes advertised as "light" or "mild," giving the impression that they aren't as harmful to health, will no longer be found on store shelves." (-associated press)
Because the president's first cigarette was when he was a teenager, and now he struggles every day to quit.
Citing his own experience as a teenage smoker... "I know," Obama said. "I was one of those teenagers, and so I know how difficult it can be to break this habit when it's been with you for a long time." (-seattle times, link above)
Because obviously fruit flavors and cartoon characters, much like cereal, attract children to smoking. It can't possibly be
stress, or the need to feel connected to others. And it couldn't possibly be rebellion.
Kids these days don't know what's good for them. So the nation's politicians adults have to take care of them.
And hey, smoking's bad for you anyhow, right? So it makes sense to regulate it for everyone, rather than just trying to institute ways for teens to
cope with stress.
I'll leave you with one more thought. I hate when I get bloggy about politics, and I have more story to write, so I'll leave you with this thought, and a final link:
"Liberals are more likely than conservatives to continue smoking once they become a smoker. About 63% of liberal smokers still smoke, compared with fewer than half of conservatives. (-from
pewsocialtrends.)
Government hand-holding, enforced by law. Because none of us are smart enough to take care of ourselves, or make our own decisions.
(edited to add: link broken, fixing now. should be better.
also, as I understand it, here is
the bill, in all its glorious legalese.)
