Duela adjusted her clothes, now free of the machines she'd been hooked up to. She followed Jonathan out of the laboratory, satisfied with his answer that the tests had all shown nothing wrong. She smoothed her hair and took a deep breath

"I can still enjoy the fact that she's jealous, can't I?" She gripped his hand a little more, grinning. "And enjoy the fact that you're mine and not hers."

"Would it make you happy if I said she could never be what you are to me?"

"Yes, it would." Duela chuckled. "I know, it's petty, but... a girl likes to feel like she's special."

"I haven't told you that?" He moved his hand to her back. "I thought I had. I'll make it up to you."

"I just like hearing it often." She leaned close to him, gripping his other hand. "What can I say? The ego likes being fed. Just like I'm sure you don't mind when I tell you how wonderful you are."

"I'm not as vain as you think, my dear." He looked at her seriously for a moment. "How are you feeling physically?"

She smiled, but it was a more serious expression. "I'm a little tired but not much. Other than that, I feel fine. I promise."

"Well, the tests say you and the child are holding up well, so I'll believe you. Did you want to know anything else about the tests?"

"Good. That's what's most important-- that the baby's healthy." She still thought he'd worried too much, but... better too concerned than not concerned enough. She squeezed his hand lightly. "Well, you could tell me whether we'll have a son or daughter. Or is it too early to tell?"

"More than healthy - some of the readings are quite promising. As for the sex - are you sure you want to know?"

"Are they? That's wonderful. Yes, I'm sure I want to know. That way I can start planning a few little changes to the nursery. I don't plan to redesign it too much, but just a little."

"I'd ask you to guess, but I'd hate to know I was disappointing you. If what you care about is the nursery decor, let's simply say you should remove any traces of pink."

Duela smiled and squeezed his hand. "A boy? Wonderful."

Smiling back, he replied, "As long as you're happy - that's what matters to me."

She leaned in and kissed him lightly. "Of course I'm happy. I've never been happier."

"I was worried you'd be disappointed that it isn't a girl."
