Reading books off a memory-stick

I've been having too much fun lately reading and occasionally e-books, and I'm extremely grateful to ramble_corner for collecting these sites. I read anything from the works of Nietzche to fairy tales as told by the Brothers Grimm all the way to the Wizard of Oz. I think I have Sense and Sensibility and Jane Eyre saved away somewhere.

There are a lot of good books that are under the jurisdiction of the Public Domain. Once something becomes part of the Public Domain, it is no longer permissable for publishing companies to demand exclusivity or royalties for the story in question. This is why companies that publish Shakespear can't sue a television station for quoting the three witches from MacBeth, and why commercials can have running gags concerning Sherlock Holmes or Tarzan.

Oddly, I had never really thought about what the Public Domain had to do with my reading habits before, other than when it came to fanfiction.
