A random act of kindness

This morning (very early), I decided to walk to the local supermarket in the cold and buy bean sprouts. How many people wake up, eat pancakes, and decide to get bean sprouts to restart the day right at 7:00 a.m. ? I don’t know, but this isn’t the point of my story.

I’ve read about these people. The people who have a practice to shout at the passerby to make their day - a little BETTER!
But today, walking in my neighborhood, I encountered such a person for the first time in my life!

She first smiled as I walked in front of her car, watching me brave the cold early morning. Then she rolled down her window and yelled,”You look so pretty!”
Her little dog barking next to her at the same volume.

I was struck with surprise then appreciation, and thanked her. Walking away there was even a hint of glee. I thought only kids feel that way. Strange. The adult in me lectured in my head. You should have returned the compliment. But it was too late.

Now why is this a big deal? Well, if you’ve ever been randomly insulted or disrespected, you’ll understand what that feels like. You aren’t expecting it, and someone comes and ruins your moment. Yuck.

Today the Universe surprised me. Myself surprised me even more. Who knew craving bean sprouts on January 2/2022 would lead to something so nice? Kindness has more power than meanness. So SHOUT a compliment at someone today.

random act of kindness, grateful, morning walk
