I have a one track mind - the epitome of cannot-walk-and-chew-gum. I can have a lot of plates spinning at once, but I really, really have to focus on them one at a time or mishaps like the following occur:
An ad rep called to confirm our placement for the year. Totally normal conversation until we get to the end in which my attention is divided. As the rep is talking I'm surfing my email, deleting old messages. Here's how the last 15 seconds of the back and forth should have gone.
Rep: Okay, I'll fax that over to you. Bye!
Me: Thanks, bye!
But since I was distracted it went like this:
Rep: Okay, I'll fax that over to you. Bye!
Me: (abruptly) DELETE.
As in, I said the word delete and then hung up on the woman. It took a split second of just staring with my mouth open at the phone before I'd realized what I'd done. I sounded like a robot with faulty wiring. "Bye." "DELETE."
Psychotic.
