The Trouble with Subungual Hematomas

Oct 19, 2009 16:00

I smashed my finger in between two panels of my garage door a weekend ago.
there was absolutely no leeway or gap within the panels,
so my finger had to accomodate for the smash by flattening to a pancake
as the shock slowly went away, and the pain set in...
i had to pull back up the garage door to retrieve my finger.
for a couple days my fingernail swelled with blood,
and became 2 times the size.
i couldnt type or anything with it without inteNse pain.
had a doctors appt scheduled for Rx refills,
but it was set for monday.
Come Saturday, I couldnt take it anymore.
Plus, I'm pretty sure the swelling was on its path to making me lose a nail.
This finger has already been cut off by an exercise bike...

So I...:
  1. Found an old vial of anesthetic, (backstory is irrelevant...)

  2. Bought some diabetic needles, cotton balls, etc.

  3. Numbed my finger (which I'm proud I could stick a needle in myself. four times, yo. internet called for it.)

  4. Took a soldering iron set to 400 C°

  5. Burned a small hole in my fingernail with it.

  6. Squeezed out the blood.

  7. Wrapped it in gauze.

  8. Video-documented the whole thing. (WARNING: blood is in it!)

It instantly felt sooooo much better.
Went to the doc today, he said they would have done the same thing,
but that I might have saved the nail by doing it early...

So: yay me.
(pretty proud of myself overall) :D
