Six more working days on my contract. I think we'll call it a learning experience. I'm looking forward to a bit of a break after this, with some travel and some sound recording and generally some more time to fix things and explore. I didn't know you were an EVE player. I wonder how many of my friends are? A flatmate in the UK played a lot, and introduced me to it, and I considered taking it up.

EVE seems to really grab people and pull them in. J wrote a really interesting piece for me about online roleplaying via Eve a while back; can't seem to find it now, but if it turns up I'll forward it on.

I remember reading an article about Eve and the use of offensive terminology in gameplay (referring to "raping" noobs or something similar). But I think that's something different.

My concern with Eve was really that, as a noob I'd be exploited. I heard horror stories about noobs being lured out into ambushes. I always thought that if I joined I would make sure it was with an established group that I knew some of the members of outside the game (i.e. people I could trust).

Unlikely to ever play it now, with SWTOR likely to be my one and only MMORPG.

wyldcard You introduced me to Y, leading to a meet-up in a British pub. Beloved and her then-partner seemed to hit it off quite well. As well as occasional online interactions, some years later we randomly wandered into him in a roleplaying shop in Edinburgh. :)

For both of you, some posts I've written about things EVE-ish. The comments are worth a look:

Tired but happy: text-based role-play

The discourse of rape in EVE-Online

EVE is many things to many people. To most people it's not particularly about roleplay: that just happens to be my thing and there's a section of the EVE world that embraces that. It does make me think about why I play the games I play, though, and how I'm usually seeking off-label uses for things: I'm very much not EVE's target demographic.
