Summary: This is not romance...is it?
Author's Notes: I just wanted an excuse to use my (with assistance from Kay) excellent description of Elizabeth's marriage.

A young woman in the nexus once told Elizabeth that her marriage sounded romantic; she'd noted how impulsive the decision to be married was, the swiftness with which it was carried out.

Elizabeth was surprised; she still is, really. Her marriage has been many things to her -- the relationship in and of itself, before marriage -- but...romantic? That's not a word she's ever even thought to use in connection to John Sheppard (either of them, honestly). John -- her husband -- didn't even react well to falling in love with her. He denied it for as long as he could. She had to push him just to get him to admit that maybe he didn't want her to leave him.

Being with her husband is uphill both ways, barefoot in the snow. With barbed wire on the ground. And while wolves chase after her. She didn't fall in love with him -- he grabbed her heart in his fist and refused to let go (except he did let go, and she's always afraid that if he did it once, he could do it again).

Romance, to Elizabeth's husband, involves buying a Tinkerbelle costume and leering at her. In fairness -- he could probably pull it off (the romance, not the costume) if he tried, but he's never really been inclined to try, and Elizabeth has never thought to ask for it. She hasn't considered it necessary; their relationship works well (or well enough) the way it is. He loves her, and he wants her, and he needs her. It's enough.

So she's not sure what to make of Zahra's conclusion. It hadn't felt romantic, arguing with Jonathan and John -- running roughshod over them until they accepted the fact that it was only fair. It hadn't felt romantic when she hadn't even had a dress, or anything she'd ever wanted from a wedding.

It has yet to occur to Elizabeth that romance is more than just candlelit dinners and long walks on the beach.

Maybe soon, though.
