Author's Notes: This is set the first time they went back to Earth, after the expedition reconnected with the SGC.
Don't wait for me.
It's what she said on the recording that she never sent -- that she never needed to send. Their abrupt reconnection to Earth, thanks to Sam, had made it unnecessary. The protection he offered from the Wraith--so much changed, after they first found the nexus. So much continued to change, after, but--we're not there yet.
We're in the dining room, of the Weir-Wallace residence in Colorado Springs.
Elizabeth is trying not to be shocked. The hurt--that comes immediately and there's nothing she can do about it, she wouldn't want to yet, but she doesn't want to be so shocked. The way he says her name is a goodbye in and of itself, and she hates how easy it is to see that.
Simon met someone else.
You've been gone a long time, Elizabeth.
Not long enough, she rages internally, not long enough if this is what she comes home to. Would it be better if she'd been gone so long that he moved away? That all she had was a note on the table saying I didn't, if she'd sent the recording and she could excuse him because she gave him permission? And how can she be so angry when she did--when he's just doing what she told him to? Except she never sent that, he never heard that, he just--
She's come home only to be abandoned and as much as she's prepared herself for this (it was never enough) and as much as she's become used to the isolation of command (it didn't have to be like that), Elizabeth is hurt and angry and as her smile falters and falls, as she turns away to pinch out the candles she lit for what she'd hoped would be one touch of romance before the reality of a life together in Atlantis--
Simon walks away.
Elizabeth closes her eyes as she listens to his footsteps taper off out of her earshot.
The worst part is she knows not all the pain comes from this one moment. She knows it's not just Simon's words that she's letting herself feel--
