So, Thursday and Friday was spent with me in Orientation for UIC. I have to say, it will probably be one of the best things I've experienced college-starting wise. It has only made me fall in love with UIC even moreso. Why?
-INCREDIBLY diverse campus. Asian (meaning anyone who is in Asia who isn't Russian), Latino, Black, Middle-Eastern, all represented and actually a shown majority (Whites are in the 46%). It makes me feel a little more sure of myself not being another "minority in a majority white" place. Bradley is really not that diverse, so I am happy. They also had a thing about how stereotypes are never meant to be immediately pasted onto people.
-Women's Interests groups. Not only is their an active feminism alliance, but there is also a MEN AGAINST SEXUAL ASSAULT group! They even gave a mini lecture about how interpersonal violence is usually portrayed and why we can't sit around and make people feel isolated when it happens to them. I wanted to take a G+WS class, BUT they were all full. And when we did the one activity mentioned above (sterotypes), I wasn't the only person who identified as a feminist. :D
-The city (duh). Three El stops on campus, U-Pass part of your fee, unlimited access to the city, they even have classes JUST FOR FIELD TRIPS AND BEING ACTIVE IN CHICAGO. Not only is campus life great, but so is being in Chicago.
-The orientation staff was all around our age, and definitely friendly.
-The openness and candidness that the staff has with students.
-The easy access to food (before 5, at least, lol).
I'm nuts about the place. Head over heels.
