a piece of the day, and all I want for Christmas

What majesty.

This is a preserved toad I found at school while wandering the biology labs. I could marvel at all the specimens soaking in their formaldehyde all day, but he jumped out at me. Perhaps he would have quite literally if he were still alive. He may be over a century in age, I've been told. He's been this inexplicable fascination for me over the past two months. He has this wonderful regard on his face that makes me delirious with laugher or approval. I believe he thinks himself to be nobility- a dominant toad in nature, and he doesn't like me to giggle. He holds one hand to his chest, and the other further outward as if his gesture indicates that whatever it is he is about to say or do, is bound to be overwhelmingly significant. His dazzling and arrogant personality has struck me and since, I have been asking every biology instructor if I can purchase him. They all say that they're unsure of who to contact about this and now I regret asking anyone at all. I've expressed mad fervor for him and oh yes, and I’m sure all the girls in my class think I’m insane. But didn't they already? One instructor mentioned the toad to my mom, "Oh Claire is SO French- you know, she's really passionate about that bullfrog!" I've called too much attention to him, however, and am now plotting to swipe my love from the laboratory two years from now, most discretely, right before graduation. Let it be known that he lost his eye in a fierce battle for supremacy- it was no ordinary feat.

(properly identified as a toad rather than a frog by Ri: the amphibian expert)
