Summary: Why is Eddis laughing at Sounis again? One-shot, post-ACoK
The king of Sounis walked slowly through the Eddisian palace, his careful pace almost concealing the limp from a score of fresh bruises.
His wife met him at the door of their apartments. “How was sword training?”
“Awful,” said Sophos with feeling. “Absolutely awful. No-” he said, raising a hand before Eddis could speak. “Don’t. Don’t tell me. Don’t tell me that it can’t have been that bad, or that I’ll get better in time, or that Gen has endured this not once but twice and come out an excellent swordsman each time. It was that bad; and I don’t feel like it will ever get better; and I was all too aware of Gen the whole time! And despite the fact that I can sway an amphitheatre of barons, shoot an ambassador and lead a forlorn hope of an army to victory, Procivitus tells me I couldn’t stick a sword in a ham! And now,” he added, “you’re laughing!”
“I am,” Eddis agreed.
Sophos eyed her. “Why do you always have to laugh when I’m frustrated? And it can’t possibly be about our noses this time!”
“No, well-” Eddis choked off her laughter. “Yes, it is about noses, actually. I - well-”
Sophos took both her hands in his. “Get it over with,” he said with a sigh.
“Procivitus says that to everyone, these days,” said Eddis levelly. “I believe he even once said it to my minister of war, though neither of them will tell what happened. But the actual phrase I am afraid he borrowed from me. It is what I said to Gen’s brother Temenus the day we were practising when we were eleven. And-” she pulled one hand free to point at her own nose “-he promptly demonstrated that while he mightn’t have been capable of sticking a sword in anything, he certainly could swing one!”
