Lanfen was one of two children born to a small middle class family in Hong Kong, and attended a local school for most of her childhood. Since her only sibling was her brother, her parents raised her like they would another boy, so that she would not feel inferior and would seek to do as well as he did academically. She took this in stride and pushed herself hard in all subjects in school.
Unfortunately, raising her as a boy meant that she had a lot of male friends- ones who didn't take to a girl acting as blunt, direct and 'uncute' as Lanfen did. After about a month of getting a variety of pranks pulled on her, she began to turn the tables, devising an assortment of pranks to pull on her classmates in return. With a pokerface like hers, more often than not, she got away with it without getting into trouble. Her harmless pranks grew into more of a hobby as time went on, and it wasn't uncommon to find her setting off firecrackers in the streets to frighten innocent passerby's.
It was come middle school that her parents realized that they'd turned her into a tomboy. She had little interest in girl things like make up and dressing up, and had taken to dressing in loose clothing. In an attempt to remedy this, they sent Lanfen to school in England in the hopes that she would pick up some grace and class that the girls supposedly had there.
While she did not pick up whatever 'grace and class' her parents had expected of her, Lanfen did learn how to speak English to the point of being completely fluent. She does, however, mesh her English and Cantonese together then and again, often forgetting that whoever she's talking to would not understand or simply not caring whether or not they did. During her time in England, she stayed with the Kirkland family, and came to know Guinevere Kirkland, a girl about a year her senior. It was Gwen who taught her most of her English, and a good deal about English culture, and while their friendship was shaky at first (Lanfen discovered that Gwen was very easily startled by firecrackers), they came to an unspoken truce that they could rely on one another.
When her year abroad came to an end, she applied to Axis Boarding School in the United States, much to her parents chagrin. Despite being a year too young, she was accepted as a freshman thanks to her academic accomplishments. While she may be new to America and on her second year abroad and away from home, she has little doubt that she can adapt and get by, regardless of the situation.
