First off, though the songs were produced in a way to make you think otherwise, all the songs on this album could have been Matchbox Twenty songs. In fact, if I had listened to it without knowing it was just Rob Thomas, and someone told me it was MB20, I would have believed them. There are obviously some stylisting differences that would never have occured in a MB20 album (example: girl's background vocal "ooh, ooh" in "This is How a Heart Breaks."), but overall I don't think Rob needed to leave MB20 in order to cut these songs.
I always have a hard time believing in the true "angst" of any MB20 album after he married Marisol. I have this theory that Rob gets all his song angst from TV shows because he cannot be writing these incredibly sad songs about his blissful life. I believe he was watching Dawson's Creek while writing More Than You Think You Are (Downfall and Bright Lights are sooooo Pacey\Joey). I have a hunch he was watching Veronica Mars while writing Something to Be. "Problem Girl" is like 110% Veronica Mars. I heart this song. (Just see my icon).
I really like the album so far. It does have a slump of listenable, yet insignificant songs in the middle and towards the end, but I'm a pop-listening whore, so I like it!
Umm, that's it. I'm going to go back to watching the Veronica Mars that I downloaded today.
