So this morning, after I showered, I went downstairs to relax and watch some tube cause it's my off day today (no classes). I'm just sitting there, chilling, sipping on some Red Bull when out of the corner of my eye I see a sillhouette(sp?) of this round thing at the very top stair coming up from the laundry room. At first, I thought it was one of J.Lo's balls, but then it "rolls up" or moves on it's own. This was perplexing to me because I knew that toy balls can't move on their own. I focus on it for a second, and begin to make out ears, eyes, and a little snout. I realized it was a rodent of some kind. Now, at first I thought, "What a cute little mouse". And after that thought had passed, the sillhouette decided to hop completely up to the top of the staircase and stare at me for about 15 seconds when I noticed, "THAT'S A FUCKING RAT!!!". Now, since we moved into this complex, many people have experienced an infestation of rats, but we had yet to have that problem. Now it seemed the tables were about to turn. So after our little staring competition, Mr.Rat decided to run away, back down to the laundry room and I got to check out his 5 or 6-incher tail.
Following this lovely event was an entire day of stuffing blankets in the crack under the door of my room, making sure my dog was in her cage at all times, calling the front office, waiting for the maintenance man to come put a trap in the laundry room, waiting for Mr.Rat to get in the trap, Mr.Rat deciding to escape out of his trap, maintenance man having to come back and fix the trap, and finally Mr.Rat being caged within the trap unharmed and taken to a place where he could be set free. A lovely day indeed...
And now a song to commemorate this glorious occasion, Michael Jackson's "Ben". Written for the 1972 movie of the same name. It was the sequel to a movie called Willard, which was remade in 2003 starring Crispin Glover. Ben is a pet rat. In the movie, a young boy befriends the rat, but the rat turns evil and recruits other rats to attack humans. In the remake of Willard, Ben becomes an enormous super-rat.
Ben, the two of us need look no more
We've both found what we were looking for
With a friend to call my own
I'll never be alone
And you, my friend will see
You've got a friend in me.
Ben, you're always running here and there
You feel you're not wanted anywhere
If you ever look behind
And don't like what you find
There's something you should know
You've got a place to go
I used to say "I and me" now it's "us" now it's "we".
Ben, most people would turn you away
I don't listen to a word they say
They don't see you as I do
I wish they would try to
I'm sure they'd think again
If they had a friend like Ben.
