IC:

Character name: Earl Ciel Phantomhive, but for the moment, he is Smile.
Fandom: Kuroshitsuji / The Black Butler (manga)
Timeline: The Circus Arc - right after he meets Doll/Freckles.
Age: 13, I believe.
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: The only "magic" Ciel possesses on his own are his sharp mind/wit - which tend to be more cruel than kind; his aim with his pistol and his fencing ability (*spoiler* which is nothing compared to his fiancee's fencing ability). Beyond that, Ciel's true power comes from his bond with a demon named Sebastian Michaelis (who is called Black in the Circus Arc). There is very little Sebastian can't do, which is why he is Ciel's favorite piece to use. (Sebastian = Black Knight in Ciel's Chess game.)
How would they use their abilities?: Tactically? Ciel likes to know what he's dealing with before he makes his move. He is only childish/irrational when his temper is ignited, which is easy to do if the right topics are broached. For example, child abuse is a hot topic for Ciel. But, considering his history, that shouldn't be surprising.
Appearance: Ciel is short - even for his age. He has bluish/grayish/black hair with bright, sky-blue eyes. However, one of those eyes is usually covered by an eye-patch (those tend to vary in color) and for a good reason. In the center of said eye is a purple pentagram. His skin is almost sickly pale - the boy needs more sun - and he is quite skinny (on top of being so short).

Dress wise, Ciel dresses to the nines as a Victorian gentleman. He prefers muted colors of black and blue, which, incidentally, match the big blue gem on his thumb. He also has another ring, but it is far less striking than the ring he inherited from his father. (The second ring contains his seal. When writing letters, he dips it into melted wax and leaves an impression of his seal behind for the receiver to see.) Lastly, Ciel prefers to use a cane when he is out and about. (There have been some theories that he hurt his leg when he was abducted - and that is possible - but he doesn't seem to have a noticeable limp. Therefore I think the cane is more for show than anything else.)
Background/Personality: The beginning of Ciel's life was idyllic - if one can ignore his occasional Asthma-related illness. He was a happy, loved child who looked forward to every holiday and every birthday with enthusiasm. However, when his tenth birthday arrived, everything changed. That night, his home was burned to the ground and his parents were killed within the blaze. Additionally, whilst searching for his parents in the flames, Ciel was kidnapped by a cult. They tortured and tormented him for a month - they even put him in a cage.

As time passed, Ciel saw other children killed in horrendous ways and he knew that it was only a matter of time before his captors killed him too. Something within the little boy broke. Gone was the laughing, cheerful child; gone was the child who hoped. He summoned something with his cries and it judged his ire and burning ambition for revenge with amusement. Yet Ciel was chosen worthy and the pentagram was placed on his eye. Ciel's first order was to kill those who had oppressed him. The demon did so with apparent relish and Ciel stood on top of the victims' bodies.

From that day forth, the black spirit/demon became Ciel's black-clad butler, Sebastian Michaelis. Ciel began to rely on him heavily - especially when it came to rebuilding the mansion and returning the Phantomhive name its former glory. As Ciel worked with Sebastian (or vice versa), his personality shifted again. While he retained the dark depression that he had experienced in captivity, he also learned to be confident in his abilities. To others - particularly those of nobility - Ciel became a smooth, lethal opponent. Because the young Earl looked at everything as a game, he became determined to never lose.

However, when he lost Madam Red, Ciel realized the price of playing particularly bloody games. While he never lost his resolve per se, it was clear that he regretted letting her die. Therefore, while Ciel pretends to be a cold, calculating guard-dog/watch-dog of Queen Victoria, his feelings aren't completely dead. His family in particular are the ones that stir his emotions the best, though he doesn't like to admit that he feels deeply for them. He sees emotions of that nature as weaknesses. (Sebastian is probably to blame on that front. Behind the scenes, he has slowly conditioned the Earl to be strong and reach for his goals ambitiously. Ciel's soul will, no doubt, taste better when the boy's revenge is satiated.)

Have you read up on how the game works?: Flaming Ferret! Starting a business, going to school and doing missions.

1st person sample: How utterly embarrassing. Why must I traipse around in these rags?! [Ciel growls low in his throat.] Surely there is more appropriate clothing somewhere? I don't believe I am asking for too much.

Sebastian, would you - [He pauses and sighs irritably.] It would be just like you to follow me in the shadows. Show yourself! [His voice raises in anger.] How are we suppose to get anything done when you are missing?

[Yet this is clearly getting him nowhere.] I am Earl Ciel Phantomhive. Should anyone come across my wayward servant, Sebastian Michaelis, I would appreciate having him returned to me. He and I have...business to conclude. [If it can be concluded at all.]

Beyond that, I would like to know where I am and why I have been brought here.

3rd person sample: He felt ridiculous. Not only was the costume mismatched, it was also itchy. Then again, considering his surroundings, the itchiness might be coming from a number of places...or people. Ciel eyed the circus performers suspiciously. Joker and Freckles might be cheerful and seemingly innocent, but that didn't mean he should let his guard down. He had come to the circus for several reasons: to find the abducted children and their abductors. He would only rest when Her Majesty Queen Victoria was satisfied that justice had been done.

"You want me to do what exactly?" he eyed Freckles quizzically, his eyes never leaving her as she demonstrated what he would be doing in the show. Paling visibly, Ciel swallowed and gave it his best attempt. He was clumsy and uncoordinated, but Freckles remained optimistic.

By the end of the day, he was sore. He was halfway tempted to order Sebastian to give him a massage, but that would give them away. Therefore he had to deal with his own aches and pains.

Sighing heavily, Ciel undressed as much as he could and climbed into bed. Thankfully, it didn't take him long to fall asleep. In fact, he slept like the dead until morning - which was a problem. The moment he was shaken awake for a wash, Ciel groaned unhappily. His eyelids felt like dead weights and his body ached even more than it had the night before.

Getting out of bed, he dressed and got ready for the day - though he seriously doubted if he could live through this ruse for long. There was a reason earls didn't become circus performers over-night.
