A book people with a strong constitution should read

Martha Long ‘Ma, He Sold Me for a Few Cigarettes’

This is the first book I've read for ages that filled me with utter horror, but I had to keep reading. True story of a little girl growing up in Dublin in the 1950s and frankly just ignored by the authorities, whilst being systematically abused.

It was very uncomfortable to read, but I had to keep going. Written in the first person, in a Dublin brogue. I got very angry and blubbed several times. There are some extraordinary kindnesses and some utterly appaulling actions by the adults around her. I've just ordered the next book, out in Sept. It's not a pleasant read, but totally compelling.
