Opera + Steampunk

Mar 21, 2010 21:12

So, one costume I am working toward is Olympia, from the Tales of Hoffmann by Offenbach.  Olympia is a mechanical doll created by the scientist Spalanzani.  She sings a very famous aria - performed here by Natalie Dessay - where she gets "stuck" in the music and the mad scientist has to adjust her.

Now, I have wanted to steampunk out this aria for a while and was pleased to see that Berkeley Opera did a steampunk version of this last year.  (how cool!).

I've started learning the aria because I've also been asked to potentially perform this at the Steampunk Ball next January! I envision Olympia with a big wind-up key on her back. What fun!!  Would love to brainstorm creatie costume ideas, too, with all you costume-types. :)
