Sogen Con Report

Jun 23, 2006 23:02

So I've been a little dead lately. Very stressed and nervous about life in general, plus a lot of random crap to take care of. So I'm taking a break and making a con report (finally) for our trip from Fort Wayne, IN to Marshall MN, for Sogen Con. (That's 14 hours in the car, folks!)

To start out with, you need to understand that we spent a lot of time in my Mother's minivan getting there. It took us two days since we decided to stop for the night rather than driving the whole thing in one long haul. This made for a much happier convention. =D

Here's our talented driver, Malina. She drove the whole freakin' way. There and back. Said she liked it or some shit. Crazy woman.

Nate and Jacki partying in the back seats. If Malina was the dad, and I was the mom, these were our two kids, listening to their CDs and playing video games the whole way. ;D

Eh-heh. Moi. Don'cha love my aviators? I left my real sunglasses at home, like the dope I am...

So we hit the middle of Wisconson (I think) and we start to see these huge windmill generator things. And I'm totally entranced. They are way cool. I want one.

More. I still want one.

So we get to the con and go to one of the voice actor panels. Oh my god, people. I have to completely change my general opinion of dubbers. These people were very cool and nice and funny and talented. And not one of them leered at me in costume. Unlike some other dubbers I've encountered. *coughscottmcneilcough*

The whole reason we went. To meet the voice of Vash the Stampede: Johnny Young Bosch. Malina totally fangirled him to the point of not being able to talk! =D

Unfortunatly, the only pics I have of my costume came from the judging for the cosplay contest. My wig has since been dyed and will be restyled. Also, there needs to be trim on the sleeve cuffs and that medallion on the center of the dress. And I really ought to be skinnier. No former princess should look so chunky.

Another pic from the judging.

Malina's costume from the contest. Jacki made the kimono some time ago, but I styled my Kagome wig and made new hair doobers to go along with some geisha make-up and voila! A new fancy costume!

She looked so damn hot.

Another pic of Jacki and Nate. Jacki has like, 6 freakin layers on! She still looks so thin. *envious* They looked so spot-on it. It was beautiful. I really felt like I had stepped out of the anime with them around. (Plus, they are a cute and snuggly couple, just like I imagine Youko and Rakushun...)

Nate had this book he read during free time on the trip, but it looked so in-character while he was dressed as Rakushun, I couldn't resist taking a pic!

Did you know Johnny Young Bosch had a band? Me either! They were pretty sweet. Plus, it was nice of them to have a concert on my birthday. Very considerate.

Here's the best pic I got of the whole band. (Sorta.)

One more pic of Johnny singing. Just for kicks.

The hallway full of cosplayers before the contest.

These girls were totally sweet and they looked great.

This chick was fun to talk to, and I admire her for wearing that costume!

It's a big sword. And how.

This Wolfwood looked great. If only he had a crinkled cigarette!

On our drive back, we noticed a sign for the town of "Melvina." I know you can't read it, but it cracked us up for a long time. Obviously, Malina's evil Transylvanian twin runs the place. =D

So, over all, the trip was great! We only got lost in Chicago once (due to construction) and all of our hotels were clean! The best part, though, was how friendly everyone was. Anime North left us feeling sort of disappointed because everyone was so cold (and sometimes just flat-out rude). But this was a nice small con were everyone got along. The voice actors sayed right across the hall from us and were super-nice. Everyone was helpful and fun to talk to. I don't know that we'll be able to go back next year, but it was worth the trip this year. It made for an awesome birthday, too!
