Ah, there are LJ specific tags for things like LJ cuts, usernames and things like that.

For cuts it's (lj-cut text="text goes here")blahblahblah(/lj-cut)

Usernames it's: (lj user="namegoeshere")

All with triangle brackets instead of parantheses

LJ cuts are generally a common courtesy. If you have a large body of text in a post either on your journal or in the main community it's a good idea to put it behind a cut out of courtesy.
