The mansion was spotless and the delicious scent of roasted pheasant and baked goods wafted through the air. Akiha had just finished her final inspection of the property, insuring that everything as in place and unsavory things (like her special drink) were properly stored out of guest sight or anyplace they would stumble into. No one would be allowed on the second floor without her express permission and presence, but she didn't worry much.
The food was being laid out in the dining room by the pair of dedicated maids - hors d'ouevres, succulent pheasant, pastries and other traditional foods the rich would prepare - and hot wassail and tea were available. It was in the sitting room where the modest alcohol selection was set out for general consumption, but the champagne was chilling in the kitchen for the midnight toast.
Hands on her hips, Akiha surveyed her domain and declared it satisfactory, trusting that Kris would indeed hold up her end of their deal to give them all some fireworks at midnight. Now all that was left was wait for the guests to arrive.
