sixth stanza [anonymous text]

How many of you are agents of death? I don't mean those who have taken a mere few lives, but those who are responsible for death on a grand scale, who have wiped out hundreds or thousands of people. Entire populations, perhaps. Worlds ( Read more... )

One of the grim reapers, at your service. I have taken countless lives, over many, many years.

Remorse...only occasionally. And for very specific deaths.

What a pleasure to know that I'm not the only one.

And why is that? What is it that makes a death so special that it warrants regret?

That one did not die a just death, but rather one from rage and a childish sense of possession.

Their own rage and sense of possession, or someone else's?

In either case, I don't see what's so special about that. Unjust deaths are perhaps more common than just ones.

My own.

So you overstepped the bounds of your duties, is that it? You took their life for your own reasons, and now you regret it?

It had unpleasant repercussions that could not be avoided, and I regret it for leaving me with such.

Were you punished for your actions? Or is it that you feel the lack of the one you killed?

In the ordinary course of your duties, you simply do what must be done without remorse, is that correct?

Punished, though thankfully not as harshly as I could have been.

And the second statement is true. I feel nothing against taking an assigned soul as much as the ordinary person would feel against brushing a stray leaf out of their hair.

Sometimes sentiment does interfere. Even we are not immune. A single death does not warrant more than light punishment. Such a small thing, when sometimes lives must be taken in a great wave, during times of war or plague or famine.

Yes, why should you? The mortal fear us, when death is a part of their existence. Without it, they would be lost and miserable, their worlds overrun. They see things so simply, fearing that their sparks will be snuffed out, not realizing that their short durations are what allow their souls to burn so bright.

It was a round thirteen, including the one I felt sentiment for. Bureaucratic mess led to a few months forced suspension. I really don't see why it needed punishment at all-it's like doing your job in advance.
