[Amamiya was a Super Mario 64 kid, having been born in 1994. If she'd had older siblings or cousins she'd perhaps have played some of the SNES titles, but she had neither. And, never being huge on video games even as a young girl, she'd only ever known Mario as a third-person platformer, not a 2D sidescroller. So she doesn't actually know what she's looking at.]

This one's new.

[She glances over from the corner of her eye; there are fireballs to dodge!]

Brand new. Want to help break it in?

...I suppose I don't have anything better to do.

[She takes the other Beanbag chair.]

So, did you make this one yourself?

Yeah. Well, other than the wrong gender and all.

Wrong gender?

[She looks up at the title.]

Super Maria Sisters...Oh.

[That dinging sound you may have heard is a lightbulb going off in her head as she figures it out.]

Exactly.

It's just wrong to have Princess Peach get kidnapped by the Koopa Queen.

It's certainly a switch.

[Now that she knows what she's looking for, she can notice some similarities between the sprite onscreen and the portly plumber she's more familiar with.]

This must be one of the older games, then? The only one I ever played looked pretty different.

The original. [There may be a hint of pride.]

Well, unless you count regular Mario Brothers. What'd you play?

Um...

[She tries to remember. It was a long time ago.]

Super Mario...54? I haven't played since I was pretty young.

Oh, wow, that's way after my time. Well, technically, this is before my time, but...

Anyway, give me a minute and I can let you in.

I don't think there was actually 54 games. I think they called it that for some other reason.

[She sits, watching, trying to figure out how to play the game properly.]

I'm tempted to pull out a "you young whippersnappers" speech here, only I'm pretty sure we're about the same age.

...OK, any one in particular look appealing to you? One and Three are the most normal. Two's kind of... weird. You throw food at things.

Honestly? I have no idea. I never played very many games as a child. I'll just have to trust in your judgment.

Really? Though these were the only ones I really bothered with. I'm definitely not a, um, hardcore gamer or whatever.

I guess I'll go with three, since it's the best of the bunch.

Want to be Mario?
