[The recreation of the ruins is quickly becoming Jessica's go-to place for alone time and moping; it's fairly remote, nobody hangs out there, and it's closed in enough for privacy. Because when you are flopped on the stone floor drawing abstract doodles in your notebook, you really need to be able to focus and avoid interruptions

At least in reality TV there's the prospect of an award. Here you just get messed with because someone's messing with you.

It'd have to be a fucking fantastic prize to make up for this.

But hey, at least you're just sitting there. It didn't show you reading a poem, or getting your ass kicked or changing clothes. Or show you to someone you hate on purpose--unless you hate me, in which case it did. [She grins, joking.]

Usually it's a substantial amount of money. Plus I guess getting seen by millions of people. That's apparently a reward for some people.

Yeah, I just... would kind of rather not have to deal with being seen by the entire Garden right now. Maybe there's something absolutely fascinating going on somewhere else.

[She hesitates.]

Just kind of sucks. You're in a stupid place where you're supposed to fall in love but all it does if you do is spy on you because you've got shitty taste in people and you can't even get some time alone to deal with it. [The frustration rises in her voice as she rambles. She cuts herself off, breathing carefully.]

Oh, girl trouble. Got it. [For once, Reno seems thoughtful.] For someone who wants us to hook up so much, the Queen's got a shitty way of going about it. And people keep disappearing, so what's the point of getting attached?

[She doesn't get this moping thing, though.] If some chick isn't into you, you're supposed to say it's her loss.

I'd say it's more mine. It was stupid to start with; she could have anyone she wanted, and I don't think she really wants anyone. I'm a total idiot, I know...

[Reno rolls her eyes.] There's your problem right there. Girls love confidence. You've got to have a better attitude.

She doesn't want anyone? Why not? Who is this chick?

It was never an issue before. [On account of Jessica was never interested before.] I don't exactly have a lot to work with, unless someone's really into like the periodic table or making robots or something.

She's... [She hestitates; she's already in the habit of trying to hide it, and she's not sure she wants to give Reno an opening to mess around with her right now.] She's just kind of different, I guess. All business, in control, that sort of thing.

Trust me. I know these things. Confidence. If you don't got it, fake it till you get it. Or just fake it.

[She laughs. That sounds familiar. Though she wouldn't think so if she knew who Jessica was talking about.] Sounds like somebody I know back home. Don't give up so easy. They might seem ice cold, but I bet they're not.

[The horror, Reno. The horror.] Maybe, but... [she rests her head on her knees] she already said she wasn't interested, and I don't think she's the type of person who'd play hard-to-get or anything.

Nah, this is one hundred percent, lifelong, genuine confidence. But since you don't have that, faking it's the best you can do.

I'm not saying she's playing hard to get, but there's probably another layer underneath. People change their minds. Believe me, the person I'm talking about would not play hard to get.
