I liked it very much. The fact that I had just watched the Hawaii 5-0 finale on dvr just before NCIS came on probably helped a lot. H50 was so disjointed, the "elite" 5-0 squad went from superhero to incompetent rookie so many times I couldn't keep up. NCIS on the other hand was almost soothing to watch. Nice pace, lots of loose ends cleaned up, a few things to ponder over the summer and a cliffhanger that makes you wonder, but doesn't make you obsess. Things to ponder:
I liked Ryan in this one and if Gibbs is true to form I would expect his next Mexico like obsession would be to bring her ex down sometime in season 10 after the first two weeks of cleaning up after the finale. I think if they kept Ryan around as a love interest for Gibbs it would be good for him and he seems to want that too. Why bother casting her son if only to acknowledge his existence for them both to disappear? They could have had her son be threatened by Dearing without any screen time for the kid so I would think they are building something there.
Knowing Ducky has re-signed his contract just leaves you to wonder who finds him and what he has to do differently. I doubt he does the Mike Franks thing and only shows up as an angel on everyone's shoulder. He is a regular cast member and not a recurring character. If he were to die and hang out everyweek giving people otherworldly advice they would need to change the name to NCIS ghostbusters.
There was lots of focus on Abby, McGee and Ducky as well as some tiva-light. Can everyone who moans and groans constantly because the show is all about Ziva Gibbs and Tony please now feel vindicated and find something else to bitch about?
I can totally see Tony and Ziva doing something like eloping and not telling a soul until the last episode of the series and it was nice to see Ziva be the protective one-making sure he didn't stay behind and covering him during the blast. They don't show enough of Ziva caring for Tony as they do the reverse and it is nice to see for a tiva fan like me.
The only thing that bugs me? If NCIS is true to form we pick up in September and 4 months have gone by at the show as well so like Somalia, Tony's undercover assignment and a couple of other cliffhangers we miss a lot of interesting stuff during those 4 months we are in the dark and will just pick up a few things with flashbacks and hints during season 10. (The only exception was the year and a half of Jeanne Benoit and Gibbs Mexico vendetta; we got those stories in nauseating detail over and over again).
Overall? Very Well Done and exceeded my expectations.
