Back in highschool, I used to paint with colors that hardly contrasted each other. As a result, the shadows were diluted, and the highlighted areas were dull.
I remember my teacher telling me that I needed to use darker colors.
Recently, I've discovered that she's correct. If I want to make something apparent, and give the viewers a sense of depth, and shape, I need to use darker darks, and lighter lights.
It has occured to me that I used to stay in the grey, so as to avoid conflict and confrontation. I would never pick a side, I would try to please everyone.
Now, I'm learning, that it's better to choose one over the other (in most cases). It's a lot nicer to have an opinion, even if I don't always agree with it, so that I can at least have a side to argue. And hell, I can always change my opinion, right?
