DisclaimerAuthor's Note: The following was supposed to be a "Get Better Soon!" gift for
effie214. But then I sent it to my betas, RL interfered with them, I forgot I had it, Google Docs went stupid, and my mom mailed the card I was going to send it in. Then the betas had it, sent it back, my computer went stupid, and I forgot yet again (!) that I had it. So after having the edited version on GDocs since May 13, I am now presenting it. Thanks to
erinm_4600 and
goodisrelative for the beta! (I also lifted a few things from
effie214's MI stories. Hope that's okay!)
Enjoy!
P.S. If anyone sees Maisy, could you send her back my way? I have ideas for a ND/HB baby fic (I think my maternal clock is ticking way too soon), a modern Beauty and the Beast story, and a Criminal Minds story based off of the
What Happens in Vegas AU of the AU fic. Also, this is the first fic I've posted on here since February. That's just pathetic, self.
Tonight is their first date in far too long. It’s nothing grand - just a visit to Victoria’s, one of the best Italian restaurants around - but Eva wants to do something special. She works through her lunch of a peanut butter sandwich and carrots so she can leave the NIH building an hour early. Eva pulls out a variety of dresses from her closet - ranging from the always-popular little black dress to a teal dress with a brown, lace overlay. At the end of the twenty minutes she’s given herself to choose a dress, the little black dress makes the final cut, and she brings it into the bathroom to steam it while she’s taking a shower.
Eva catches herself humming and grins at herself in the mirror as she’s styling her hair. She and Miles have been dating for about three years and as Anneliese says: “You two act like you’re teenagers on your first date and, yet, you act like a married couple who’ve been together for fifty years.” She feels like the teenager tonight and decides that’s okay.
///
The look in Miles’ eyes and the actions taken by both of them after Miles sees Eva almost makes them miss their reservation - Eva thinks she picked the right dress tonight. The two of them have a rule: no work talk or serious conversations while eating a meal. Eva tells a story that Anneliese sent in an e-mail: Anneliese’s boss is notorious for getting lost and Anneliese provided Eva with a good story involving that and Germany’s Prime Minister along with a rooster, a pineapple, and a Star Trek reference. Miles says that his dad called and offered to fly them out to San Francisco for a vacation.
///
Miles finds Eva, cuddled up on the couch in her Boston Red Sox sweatshirt, drowsily watching the highlights from the Sox/Yankees game on ESPN. She lifts her feet up and Miles knows there’s a foot rub in his immediate future. Eva turns onto her back after Miles sits down and plops her feet onto his lap.
Just before she falls asleep, Eva makes a note to include today on her blog’s list of things she’s been thankful for this week.
///
Both of their phones ring and Miles answers his first. Eva manages to knock hers onto the floor and almost falls off the bed while trying to reach it and listen to Miles’ side of the conversation. Connor contacted Miles with a barked message to get into work, immediately. Eva manages to get her phone on the third try and the person calling turns out to be the usual case contact.
“If Connor called, it must be bad,” Miles states after helping pull Eva back onto the bed and pushing the ‘end’ button on his phone. Eva nods and sets her phone back on the desk next to the bed.
“At least, this time, it’s not four a.m.,” Eva replies as she slips out of bed. Miles has finally figured out how to use her coffee machine, so he exits the bedroom to start a pot while she showers.
The microwave dings as she steps into the kitchen and Miles heads off to the bathroom. The two of them have come up with a routine in the morning that works well for them.
///
It’s a doozy of a case and Eva’s somewhat grateful that they don’t have to leave the state for this one. And that she has no advanced medical training, because Connor’s riding everyone on their team with an MD extra hard. By three, Eva recognizes that Miles is dangerously close to reaching the end of his rope (which she’s only seen a handful of times because he’s one of the most even-tempered people she knows). So Eva pulls him into a deserted hospital room and plays ‘Heigh Ho’ for him. It’s silly and simple and somewhat childish, but it works. Miles gets back under control and Eva’s glad of that because the team doesn’t need the two of them fighting. And Eva knows she’ll probably get teased by Miles, but she’s okay with that. There’s always the coffee machine if Miles gets to be too much.
MIMIMI
Miles isn't certain what wakes him, probably the traffic outside. He does note the distinct lack of body heat next to him and blindly pats around on the mattress, trying to locate Eva. When he doesn't find her, he rubs at his eyes and slings himself up into a sitting position. He pulls on a t-shirt from the floor as he walks out of the bedroom, looking around the living room, tiredly. The TV's off and the couch is lacking a stack of blankets which, in the past few days, has seen Eva when she can't sleep. He walks into the kitchen and sees her on the floor, eating ice cream out of the carton.
"Eva, what are you doing?" The end of the sentence is punctuated with a yawn.
"Eating ice cream," she states as she digs into the carton and pulls out an over-sized scoop of ice cream.
Miles peers at the microwave clock. "It's...two o’clock in the morning. We both have to be up by five."
"I don't care," Eva states after she's done eating the scoop. Miles grabs a spoon from the cabinet drawer as he makes his way over to her and plops down next to her.
"Wanna tell me?" he asks, grabbing his own spoonful and looking at it closely.
"There's no hot sauce or cinnamon on this, if that's what you're wondering." Eva has to laugh at Miles' expression of relief as he sticks the spoon in his mouth.
"And to answer your question, no. I'm just being a female who's pregnant."
"Even so, that's still not normal for you."
Eva shrugs as she eats more ice cream.
The two eat the ice cream in silence for a few moments before Eva sticks her spoon in the carton and turns to Miles. "What if I can't do this? My mom couldn't; what if I'm like her?"
"First of all, you're not your mother. She had her reasons for placing you in the foster care system. You know what the system's like and you'd do pretty much anything to make sure that doesn't happen to this baby. Second of all, you've got me. Your birth mother didn't have anyone, as far as you know. That support system can help so much."
"Considering it's your fault for getting me pregnant, you better be my support system."
Miles grins at that. "And as Connor says so often, you're Eva Rossi. That should count for something."
Eva sighs and leans forward enough that her forehead is resting on Miles' shoulder.
"I don't know what to do." She whispers it so softly that Miles almost doesn't catch it.
"I think that's part of being a parent - especially a first time parent. I've been freaking out too." Miles admits. Eva looks up at him in surprise.
"Really? You've seemed so calm and collected."
Miles shakes his head. "No, I've definitely been freaking out."
"Why haven't you told me?"
"I didn't want you freaking out because I've been freaking out. That's too much freaking out for you. One of us had to appear to be in control."
"That's too much of the word 'freaking' from you," Eva says, returning to the ice cream. "The word just seems weird coming from you."
"It felt weird saying it." Miles replies. "Seriously though, we'll get through it together. We're not our parents."
"We're not our parents," Eva repeats as she passes Miles' spoon over to him.
