Chapter 24

He woke up with a jolt, unable to comprehend the warmth curled around him. It took a moment or two to realize who it was and the panic to wash over him and disappear. The baby gave a sudden impatient kick, as if he too had gotten panicked along with his father.
Jaejoong sighed, contemplating briefly as he slipped his own pajamas that if this would be the ideal time to slip away into another room. He had not forgiven Yunho and he was far from trusting him. ‘Then why did you sleep with him?’ his mind questioned, conjuring up images of his breathless pants as Yunho fucked him onto the mattress softly.

He could turn and leave, hold on to his hurt, anger, pain of betrayal. And then Yunho moved still caught up in the throes of sleep nudged closer to Jaejoong. He looked calm asleep, not someone who would offer protection but rather someone who needed them as well. And Jaejoong who had been thrown back and forth on different pedestals found it surprising to be wanted as much he wanted. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
For now he was content in Yunho’s arms, content in the shadows of dark and Yunho’s warm presence that he fell asleep feeling safer than he had done in eons.

Yoochun had come with rather high hopes to the law firm. He had approached one of the biggest ones of course, and he had known that the law firm had a conflict with his father. It was no doubt that his father was too proud a man to bow down to anyone, making more than his fair share of enemies. This worked as an advantage to Yoochun who was free to Approach Mr.Kim, one of the most successful lawyers in Korea for Legal advice. Yoochun was rather impressed by the large waiting area and the number of secretaries before he could approach the lawyer but rather surprised at the lawyer.
“Pardon” he said trying to keep the evident irritation out of his voice “I am here to see a Mr.Kim Junsu”
“I am Kim Junsu” the young man said smiling politely “please have a seat Mr.Park”
Yoochun who had waited days just to get a free slot at Mr.Kim’s busy schedule was irritated beyond belief.
“Are you kidding me?”
The polite smile slid off the other man’s face “I am sorry” he said “is something the matter”
“Yes” Yoochun said “I said to meet the most successful lawyer in this firm and I get some amateur kid who barely started practicing”
The other man looked offended at that “I am the most successful lawyer here” he said “and I will have you know that I may only have 7 years experience but I’ve never lost a single case”

Yoochun slumped down the chair looking hopeless, “It is a matter of legal advice” he said sighing “I may need someone with more experience”
Junsu smiled at that, his features transforming instantly “Gimme a try”
And if Yoochun was not so worried he may have found that smile attractive.

The late night shifts was always a chore. Changmin had an even worse day, Yoona was well aware of this fact. The 8 year old child who was under his care had passed away.
She had a weak immunity and nothing Changmin could have done would have made it easier. Of course this was easier said than done. Especially when Changmin had bonded so well with the young girl, sneaking in during his tea breaks so that he could read her a story.
The senior nurse Becky had shook her head when she saw Changmin asleep in the room, his head lolling uncomfortably as he sat near the sleeping child’s bed. “That boy is going to get his heart broken”
Yoona wanted to argue, stand up for Changmin’s faith in that young girl than agree with Becky’s ominous prediction.
But Yoona wasn’t naive, she had stood arms in arms with death too often for her to believe in false dreams.

So when she walked into the storage room she wasn’t too surprised to Changmin sitting in the corner, knees brunched up head buried in his arms.
“Oh Yoona shi” he said trying to smile, even though his eyes looked unfocussed and nose red “I fell asleep”
She could have walked away then, with the man child broken, or pretended that she didn’t quiet see his sorrow.
She put her arms around him “Its ok”
He grabbed a little tighter than expected, an anchor to his drowning mind “I couldn’t save her” the whisper and his warm breath across her neck as he held her tight.
And she didn’t have the heart to wrench free, patted his head softly.

How long they sat, she didn’t know, half crouched that she forgot how her knees felt.
He finally let her go “I am sorry” he said not quiet meeting her eyes.
She had intended to smile and get up, laugh a bit awkwardly and then bring him a bar of her favorite candy.
The words slipped at the broken bits in his eyes.
“I am sorry” he whispered.
And she was to ask why, or she thought before his lips came crashing down on hers.

It was the softest of kisses, the slightest brush of spring before winter- a breath of life to the sleeping bloom.
And she gasped, maybe of surprise, at the shock that laced through her body and curled her toes, her mind that begged her to draw back before falling into the abyss of insanity that his lips offered.
At the soft opening of her mouth, he deepened the kiss. His tongue that curled perfectly in her mouth, tasted honey sweet and summer warm.
His fingers curled around her waist and she made the softest noise as her fingers wound up in his crisp brown hair and tugged him closer still.

They broke up for air and he admired the redness of her lips as the words rushed past before her senses would sink back in.
“Life is too short” he breathed out “and I am afraid that if I loose you now I may never have you at all”
She would have laughed then, at the rumpled hair and the seriousness of his voice when his lips were still bitten raw.
But she didn’t.
It was her turn to apologize when she walked out.
And he just breathed in, the air felt colder then.
