Chapter 20:
The hospital appointments were always a hassle and more trouble than he imagined. Most of the times he would drop by Mrs.Lee's private clinic for them, this was one of the rare occasions he had to turn up in the hospital for.
The ULTRASOUNDS
It always scared him, unnerved him and made him happy enough to cry and then feel somehow terribly alone.
The 5th month scan- he had read up on, was supposed to be terribly important, the one that would tell him if his child was suffering from any genetic abnormalities.
"I am worried Jaejoong" Mrs. Lee said solemnly "you are really not healthy", he wasn't concerned about his health as much he was about his child and maybe that’s why even without realizing he dials Yunho's number.
It takes barely two rings for Yunho to pick up the phone "Hi" he says softly wondering why he sounds tired, "just talk to me"
Yunho pauses on the other end, he can hear the exhale of breath, the frustration that is probably clear as day light on his face "are you alright?" he asks tentatively almost as if he is afraid of the answer.
"I am ok" Jaejoong answers, barely convincing himself "just stressed and I wanted someone to talk to"
Yunho smiled on the other end “really?” he questioned folding the file he was reading with a definite snap.
Jaejoong leaned against the plastic chairs which offered no comfort to his aching back.
“Hmmm” he answered instead, unconsciously smiling.
“Imagine you have an important interview” he said.
“Do you?” Yunho questioned suddenly.
“Imagine” Jaejoong snapped back, “and multiply it by a thousand” he said “I feel that kind of nervous”
“I hope its not a ‘date’ kind of nervousness” he joked back, however he couldn’t quiet keep the fear off his voice which made Jaejoong smirk.
“No not a date kind of nervousness” he assured “What do you normally do?”
“I never get that nervous” Yunho replied cheekily.
Jaejoong groaned on the other end “You are not very helpful”
“Well” Yunho said pausing thoughtfully ‘I always call someone close to me”
Jaejoong sighed softly on the other end “you do?”
“Yea” he said “sometimes my mom, or my friends”
“You’ve never called me” Jaejoong pointed out.
“You made me nervous” he pointed out “I was always uncertain that when I woke up you would disappear”
Jaejoong smiled on the other end “you are cheesy”
“I know” Yunho agreed.
The nurse motioned on the other end of the room that he was the next one to go in. He nodded at the woman and reluctantly at the phone.
“I have to go” he said, trying his best to keep the disappointment out of his voice. Yunho didn’t sound too happy at the statement either.
He hummed back reluctantly, “I love you” he said, hoping the other would catch the sincerity in his voice.
The words were a shock to his statement, couldn’t quiet help the way his heart rattled in his chest. The sharp exhalation gave Yunho the clue that his statement had the impact he desired, he waited anxiously on the other end.
But surprise came in another form when he felt definite movement in his belly instead. Startled he gave a short gasp of surprise causing Yunho on the other side to worry.
“Are you okay?” he asked, scared.
Jaejoong hummed in response “say that again” he asked desperately trying to hide the sudden tears that sprang into his eyes.
“I love you” he said tentatively as Jaejoong felt the distinct kick.
He wanted to tell, at that very moment how pointless their whole argument had seemed in the first place. That no matter how he tried to convince himself, right now he couldn’t think otherwise.
Further thoughts were abruptly cut off as he felt someone patting his shoulders gently, he looked up to see Seo young’s smiling face.
“I knew you were nervous here coming alone” she began, “I hope you don’t mind”
“Of course not” Jaejoong cut her off, “I wanted you to come” he said almost shyly.
Seo young was thrilled to see her grandchild, no doubt, but her first question was about Jaejoong’s health.
She looked at the tiny grainy blob on the screen and heard the ever so strong heartbeats, “Is Jaejoong fine?” she asked even though her heart was over whelmed by the sight of her grandchild.
“He is fine” Lee hastened to reply, patting the boy’s hair in an unusual gesture of warmth “of course Jaejoong’s heath has been the most important issue”
Seo young nodded "I am glad"
in the end it turned out that Jaejoong's worries were unnecessary - his baby was perfectly fine
-----------------
Yoona was drinking a very bitter cup of coffee.
Yoochun looked at her curiously, "are you even listening to me?" he teases, nudging her shin with his shoes.
She smiled politely, taking another sip from her Styrofoam cup.
"I am sorry that most of our dates are in hospital cafeteria" he said apologetically.
"You mean this is another date?" she teased, as another pair of nurses threw her envious looks.
It seemed ironic that only a few weeks ago her and Yoochun were on not so friendly terms.
But his apology was sincere as he admitted earnestly that he hadn't been a good friend to Jaejoong when he needed him the most, he was trying his best now.
Yoona was far from impressed, but there was something so sincere in his eyes that she couldn't turn her back on him.
It was her friends in the hospital who had filled her on the young doctor's life.
"He left home at a very young age and worked his way through college" the ever motherly Sunny sympathized "poor dear, he lived without love all his life"
"Everyone had their eyes on him at med school" Tiffany says flippantly "went out with no one there though" she says "thought he was gay"
She agreed to the date mostly because Sunny and Taeyeon had insisted vehemently.
But it was hard to resist someone so heartfelt and earnest.
They had settled into a pattern like they had dated for eons, into a mellow comfortableness.
He reached over the table and held her hand briefly, "what are you worrying about?" he asked.
'You don't make my heart beat fast' she thought,'after Jaejoong no one makes me feel like that', she smiled again at him "I am worried about the interns"
that part had been partially true, the new med interns were always a head ache for the nurses.
With their inexperience and blatantly cocky attitudes, most of them considered nurses lower life forms.
And worse yet some of them thought that the nurses should be honored that they were being asked out by them.
Yoochun traced patterns on her pale skin "don't worry" he said soothingly "I can kick their asses if they try anything"
She grinned at that.
Their almost romantic moment was interrupted rather abruptly when Yoochun's phone chirruped.
She watched his eyes brows furrow in anger at the number "I've to get this" he said, hurrying out of the cafeteria.
Yoochun was surprised his father's nerve in making a phone call, the last time he called was to make sure Yoochun had not written off his inheritance or spend a penny of it.
He didn't care a rat's ass for his inheritance which is exactly what he said to his father the last time the man had called him.
"What do you want?' Yoochun snapped before the other man said a word.
"hello to you too son" he drawled
"What do you want" he asked again "before I hang up, I've got work to do"
"Oh of course" his father did not hide the disgust in his voice
"aren't you a doctor" he said "come home" he said simply
"What" Yoochun exhaled in disbelief "if you think..."
His father cut off mid-rant "your mother is dying"
