the standard logic of cormag is inconsistent

Apr 09, 2012 14:03

I got this random urge to write some Cormag fic, so I started digging through the Sacred Stones script and support conversations to get a better sense of his character (been years since I last played FE8, so my memory's a bit hazy)...

…and I discovered that the writing with respect to Cormag is irritatingly inconsistent.

In which Lua finds Cormag inconsistent. )

(Came across a fic of yours on fanfiction.net, found my way here.)

I think some of Cormag's odd traits can be reconciled with one another. He seems like an independently minded soldier who nevertheless has a strong sense of loyalty to his family (Glen) and his country. Cormag is a very self-reliant man who has a pretty good idea of how strong he is as well as how far that strength can really take him.

He probably considers Tana and the other "royal types" so important because he's intelligent enough to realize that while he may be able to hold his own in a war, it takes reliable royals to keep wars from breaking out in the first place. He knows from first hand experience what can happen when princes and kings fail in their duty.

That's pretty much the best I can do. Really, Cormag is just all over the place. Most of it can be attributed to the fact that his life is an utter mess during the war--his brother just died, he's been forced by circumstance to fight against his homeland, etcetera--but it still seems strange.

Hah, I forgot about that spear. Perhaps killing Valter puts Cormag's demons to rest? I really don't know.

Hey, thanks for dropping by :D

I'd forgotten about the spear myself until I started reading through his supports (even though I actually did support Dussel/Cormag my first runthough, thus making me like the only person I know to actually use Dussel in combat, haha), and it definitely freaked me out. "Oh shit this was a thing and it has bad idea written all over it," etc etc

Duessel: So hey, here's this spear that somehow made Valter even crazier than he was to start with.

Cormag: Dude, sweet, gimme!

Duessel: Hmm, I'm really not sure if that's a good idea--

Cormag: C'MON MAN, I CAN TOTALLY HANDLE IT.

Duessel: Oh, okay!

I would like to think that if Cormag did take the spear, he would be careful enough to notice if it was starting to influence him.

Or he becomes the next Valter. Who knows?
