Titles

There's a famous quip in compsciland: "There are only two hard problems in computer science: cache invalidation and naming things."The same thing totally applies to story-writing. (Well, the naming things part. Cache invalidation, not so much.) I think titles are hard, and I guess I'd like to blather about some of my title-ing adventures, and ( Read more... )

That bit about D&D is great. <3

The stories behind your titles are really interesting! And I...hadn't even thought about the attraction-based meaning of Crush for that fic before wow oops.

As for me...when I come up with a name varies. I struggle with this a lot and often end up with something either generic or that seemed ~clever~ at 2:00 AM when I really just wanted to post the fic. Cue facepalming upon waking up. (aka Assembly) (Yes Emma I know he's a mechanic) (and they're assembling around a table) (but honestly).

"As Long as it's Beautiful" came from the opening theme of my favorite anime. Certain parts of it made me think of Jill and it just sort of clicked. It seemed to work well enough with the fic, considering Mist's worldview and how she helps Jill cope.

"Breathe My Air" as a title for my yuri collection came from googling yuri opening theme lyrics, too. Since the fics were all different I figured something generically romantic was best. (Though incidentally, I still regret choosing this instead of "Pastel Pure" after the title of MariMite's opening).

"Balberith" came from googling the name of Pelleas's SS tome and discovering the name was associated with a demon that tempted someone. I referenced his spirit-charming and its pull on him a lot in that fic, so it seemed fitting.

"Frost Guardian" was one of the few cases where I had a name picked out long before the fic was finished. It's also the title I'm most attached to. I think I might have been doing a brainstorming session with various words associated with the fic's theme. I liked the double meaning with the snow angels and Ike himself, especially with the comparisons the fic draws between him and Greil, and then the snow angels being compared to Elena at the end.

My other titles are fairly straight forward and don't have anything particularly interesting about them. I do want to say that aaages ago I had an idea for a tellius future fic focusing on how Ike's image got warped over time, and one line referenced him angering a noble by putting muddy boots on a table. The fic was going to be called "History's Muddy Footprints." I was immensely pleased.

but rosaaaaage I really liked the title "Assembly" it was punny and great

also: re: "Frost Guardian": I totally thought of the Snowager from Neopets when I first saw this title, oops. (it's a good title, though! I just spent too much of my childhood swiping treasures from giant frostbeasts)

I liked it too in terms of punniness but when I think about in terms of it being THE title encompassing a fic I'd spent forever on it was a bit like 'why is this so silly,' you know? XD

--I totally didn't think of that and I spent my childhood swiping treasures from frostbeasts, too. :P
