He held up five fingers because manual means it's a five speed transmission--five gears. I didn't know how to drive stick either and then I bought a manual shift car and had to learn. I kept rolling into the grass in our yard and couldn't get it back into the driveway over and over and then all of a sudden I could do it. Once you master shifting with the clutch? It totally becomes second nature. And trust me--if I can do it--you can do it.

I--okay. Okay. I just wish I didn't have to try to learn in the middle of winter. 8( But thanks for the vote of confidence, bb, that helps.

If you can't hear it, you'll feel it. :) Worry not, it will be okay!

Have you ever ridden a dirt bike or motorcycle? Same principle. I learned to drive a car with a stick shift originally, but I'd driven a tractor before that, so I had the main idea. I always preferred stick until I had to sit in traffic relentlessly and I got tired of it.

No, I haven't! D: Literally the only thing I've driven with a clutch was my grandma's ancient Chevy Love wherein I backed over her fencepost. o__o

*deep breaths* *yoga* Ommmm...

I drove my parents' stick shift once. I tried to shift up into fifth and shifted down into second instead and there were noises and smoke came from under the hood. We were on, like, I-93. Somehow none of us died and we ended up at a tiny restaurant run by a Brazilian family with pictures of Minnie Mouse on the wall. My mother, who spent part of her childhood in Brazil, had a grand old time speaking Portuguese. My father and brother talked and laughed. I sat in a corner and wept. That was eighteen years ago. I have not tried driving stick since.

/unhelpful anecdote

But I do know people who have learned to drive stick and eventually come to like it better. I am just not those people.

DDDDDD:

um. Yeah, I would have been a sobbing mess too. *hugs*

I'm coming to grips with the fact that it's either going to be one of those things I look back on and laugh at myself for being such a baby about it, or a MAJOR CATASTROPHIC DISASTER LEAVING ME AND OTHERS SCARRED FOR LIFE. MAYBE LITERALLY.
