Despite having better cellphones than the US, and toilets with as many functions as a typical American cellphone, Japan is a cash society. Checks have never caught on here, and many places do not accept credit cards. So when I need to pay rent, I go to the landlord's bank and send money to my landlord's account. Japanese ATM's also have many functions. Some of them even have English menus. However, the English menu only has about 1/3 of the options that the Japanese menu has. One of the options that disappears is the one I need. My boss came with me the first time and made a card that remembers my address and the recipients information. So, I thought I could figure out how to send money by myself.

No. I couldn't figure out how to tell the ATM that I needed change. Or even if I needed to tell the ATM that. You can only send money between 9-3, so I have to try again tomorrow. sigh. A

Japanese ATM's are complicated. Notoriously so. There is even a funny video about it.

At least I managed to pay my cell phone bill, which is much easier. All I have to do is give the nice postal office worker the bill and the money. They take my money, stamp my bill, and say some things in Japanese, to which I reply thank you. Easy.
