I don’t own anything from Supernatural they all belong to Kripke & the CW. I just like to play with their toys. Thanks to @Maddeh and @AnimeChik27 for being my Alpha and Beta; without them this fic would have driven me crazy and Chitaqua would be spelled wrong a different way every time it is mentioned. I got the idea & the name of the Fic from Sarah McLaughlin’s song Building a Mystery. Everything about that song reminds me of 2014 Castiel. This is written for

Part TenPart Eleven
It is late when the caravan pulls into the driveway of the prison. The lights are off to conserve energy but some of the windows are aglow from candle light. Jo watches as the iron gates open, she can see people in the guard towers watching them and the perimeter through the darkness. “A prison? This is your new compound?”
“Sometimes jail is the only place for an honest man.” Cas says from the front seat his voice gruff like he was sleeping.
Dean just looks at him. “Wow Cas that is actually a really eloquent way of putting it.”
“Not mine.” Cas grumbles sitting up and stretching his back out. “Stole it from Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. He was an extraordinary man, I enjoyed reading his biography.” Dean just nods his agreement. Cas looks at Jo in the mirror again. “Chuck thought that I might benefit from learning about politics and great leaders so he has been giving me books to read. I find that I am lacking in my knowledge of human history for the past 2000 yrs.”
“Oh, well that is good.” Is all Jo can really come up with because really what do you say to that?
The car comes to a stop and several armed guards come out to greet the caravan. Dean gets out and starts unloading the supplies. Cas and Jo get out and are met by Bonnie and Chuck. Jo gives Chuck a hug and turns her attention to Bonnie who is holding a large flask.
Bonnie hands Cas the flask, he takes a sip and passes it to Jo who looks at Cas for reference. “Sorry Jo house rules. We can’t be too sure, so we have our own special ‘Are you a monster?’ drink. Every time we leave the grounds we have to drink this before we’re allowed back in the building.”
Jo takes the flask and sips from it. She coughs at the taste. “Jesus Christ that is disgusting. Do I want to know what is in it?” Dean comes around and takes the flash pulling a full swig from it before smacking his lips like it was refreshing as he hands it back to Bonnie. Jo pulls a face of revulsion.
Cas just smiles at the two of them and shakes his head. “Probably not. It isn’t perfect but gets most of the bigger threats. Bonnie also has a simple blood test she will need to run on your as well. She just needs to prick your finger and look at your blood under the microscope. The Croatoan virus has sulfur in it and we can detect the early stages but it doesn’t cause the infected to respond to holy water or salt like a demon.”
Dean takes out the mysterious box of toys out of the trunk. “Hey Cas, I’m going to bring the mystery box up to the library and give it to Maria. You going to get the new people settled in?”
Cas walks over to Dean smiling at him. “Sure Santa, tell Maria we’ll be bringing up some more school supplies too once Chuck sorts through it all. I’ll be in after and we can give Jo the grand tour.”
Dean gives Jo a wink before walking away. Jo smiles back then turns to Cas and follows him to her group. There is a flurry of activity around them as the new supplies are unloaded by several men and women of varying ages. Jo can’t help but be impressed at the almost military efficiency she is seeing. Bonnie and Chuck have made their way down to their guests by the time they get there.
Ted, the Leader of her group and a former cop, is talking with Bonnie and Chuck about the flask. “No sorry not drinking it until you tell me what is in it.” He looks to Jo for support. “Jo you can’t be ok with this.”
Jo steps up and takes the flask from Bonnie. She walks up to her group and takes another swig of the still horrid tasting liquid. “There are a few people I would trust with my life and Cas is one of them. It tastes like shit but they have people here that need to be protected. I have been told Bonnie also needs to prick our fingers to check our blood for the Croatoan virus. They are offering a safe place to stay, permanently if you want, but the tests have to be run before we are allowed inside. So who is going to take this from me?”
A young man who looks like he’s in his teenage years steps forward first, he has brown hair and eyes, his skin is pale, and he looks a little thin from malnourishment but otherwise in good shape. He takes the flask from Jo, he sniffs the mouth and wrinkles his nose at the smell before sipping it. “Argh…” He says after swallowing it and passes the flask to another young man next to him. “Son of a bitch that is putrid.”
Jo smiles at the teenager and ruffles his hair. The rest of her party follows along each taking a drink. Jo walks the teenager over to Cas. “This is the kid I was telling you about, the natural hunter. Cas this is Ben”
Cas smiles at the young man and holds his hand out to him. “Hello Ben I’m Cas it is nice to meet you. Jo told us that you have some experience with a hunter.”
Ben shakes Cas’ hand. “Yeah a few years ago a bunch of Changelings tried to take over my neighborhood. They would have killed most of us if it wasn’t for a hunter and his brother. They came in kicked some ass then took off again. After that I researched as much as I could about the Supernatural.”
Hearing the story Cas looks at Jo wondering if the hunter and brother could have been Dean and Sam. “I see. Well it is good to have you with us. Bonnie will lead you to the hospital wing for the blood test.” He reaches inside to pull at an iota of his Grace so he can give the newcomers souls a once over. Monsters you can check with different things but the only way to know if a human is tainted is by looking at their souls. Cas looks over the teenager and is shocked to see a part of Deans soul in the young man. He audibly gasps in shock at seeing this. There is only one reason for Dean’s soul to be part of his. This is Dean’s child.
Jo notices the almost pained look on Cas’ face and steps forward. Ben has already gone back to his friend’s side and is laughing at Ted’s expression after taking a sip of the Monster Juice. Cas just frowns at Jo. “You never asked him the name of the hunter did you?”
Jo just looks at Cas weird. “No I never thought it relevant. Most hunters use an alias anyway. Why? Do you think it could be Sam and Dean? He never told me that brother part before.”
Cas steadies his expression. “Oh I’m positive it is Dean and Sam he met.” Cas takes a breath and looks away rubbing the back of his neck. “Look Jo I need to go talk to Dean. Just go with Bonnie and Chuck and I’ll be back to check on you later.” He doesn’t give her a chance to reply, turns around and jogs into the building.
Chuck looks over at Jo and then back to where Cas retreated. He walks over to her. “Where is Cas jogging off to? He looked upset.”
Jo shrugs and sighs. “I have no idea. I introduced him to Ben over there and it turns out he might know Dean and Sam. Cas freaked out and said he needs to talk to Dean right now.”
Chucks eyebrows rise up comically high and his eyes get big. “Ben? Do you know his last name?”
Jo doesn’t so she turns to the young man’s direction. “Hey Ben, what’s your last name?”
The teen smirks at her and she is suddenly hit with déjà vu. “Braeden. Why you thinking of taking it cause I don’t mind the age difference.”
Jo just shakes her head at him smiling at his overconfidence. “Haha, you wish. Just trying to give Chuck here info for his census.” She turns back to Chuck who looks like a deer in the headlights. “What is going on? Why are you freaking out now?
Chuck clears his throat and leans into her so no one else can hear. “Um remember I was writing the Winchester Gospels.” Jo nods her head. “I was privy to some information that Dean and Sam didn’t always know. I remember writing about Ben and his mom and the Changelings.”
Still nodding, “Yeah ok, so what? Did Dean fuck his mom or something because that wouldn’t surprise me.”
Chuck leans back and looks at Ben. He runs his hand through his hair and leans back in. “Yeah Dean and Lisa had a pretty wild weekend but it was about sixteen years ago.”
Jo finally gets it and draws in a breath. “You mean Ben is Dean’s?”
“Yeah” Chuck cuts in. “Dean met him back then and asked Lisa if he was the father, but Lisa said no. What I mean by privy information is I know she lied.”
“That bitch.” Jo snaps loudly, causing Bonnie to turn around and frown at the two of them. “How could she lie to him like that? He has a right to know his kid.”
Chuck just shrugs. “She thought she was doing the right thing. Dean wasn’t the type to settle down and she didn’t want Ben to be exposed to his lifestyle. So she lied. It was just before he went to Hell anyway so it wasn’t like he had the opportunity to stay and live the ‘Apple Pie’ life.”
Jo frowns at that excuse, but nods her head anyway knowing that all of them were valid at the time. “So Cas is freaking out because he doesn’t know how Dean will react or because he thinks he kept it from him?”
Chuck laughs at that one. “Trust me there isn’t much Dean and Cas don’t share especially these days. I’m sure Cas is freaking out because he thinks Dean will freak out. Dean’s been pretty touch and go since Sam. It took a lot out of him and Cas has been picking up the pieces. To tell the truth this might be just what he needs. Dean was pretty upset when Lisa told him Ben wasn’t his. I think he’ll be fine with the news but just in case don’t be surprised if we don’t see them until breakfast.”
Jo rolls her eyes. “Cas has always been good about holding Dean together. The cracks he was scared to show everyone else he never hid from Cas. So are they out now? Are they actually together? Because when I left Dean was pretty bad. Everyone was so angry and sad over Mom and Bobby. We all knew the two of them were fucking. I assumed Cas would find a way to talk to him.”
Chuck frowns at her again but notices that Bonnie was leading the newcomers into the building. “I promise I’ll fill you in but we should go with Bonnie and make sure everything is sorted out.”
Jo smiles. “Sure lead the way.”
************************************
It is getting close to Christmas and a few of the younger children have been asking about Santa Claus. It is hard to explain to them that even though monsters are real it doesn’t make everything real. Maria had brought this up to Dean a couple of weeks ago and he took the children’s question to heart. He never really had a Christmas growing up and didn’t want that for other the kids in his community. So the box of toys are going to be put out in hopes that it will bring some joy to the little ones who are sometimes short on it in this world. The pair of them are sorting through the box making sure that they have something for everyone. When Cas walks in Maria greets him with a smile and he smiles back, closing into Dean’s bubble placing a hand on Dean’s back.
To most people Cas would seem fine. Cas has a great poker face when he wants one and even better at putting on a happy face when he’s upset. Right now Cas is smiling a little too gummy and Dean can tell by his shifting that his feathers are ruffled; possibly literally. “Maria, I have to talk to Cas about something. Let me know if I missed anything and I’ll see what I can do about setting up another supply run next week.” He turns to Cas and grabs him by the hand, pulling him out the door.
The library, chapel, and hospital are all in the same wing so it is not far to get from the library to their room beside the chapel. Once inside Dean looks at Cas who has let his façade fall. “What’s up Cas. You seem freaked out.” Dean sits on the edge of their bed.
Cas takes a deep breath and begins pacing. Actually paces back and forth, this can’t be good.
Dean gets up and stops him from pacing but taking placing his hands on his shoulders then leaning in for a gentle kiss. Cas calms somewhat and melts into him. “You ok now? Just tell me what is going on.”
Cas takes a deep breath and sits on the bed where Dean was just sitting. “I met the people that are with Jo. I checked their souls and they are good people.”
“That’s good Cas; so what has you so freaked?” Dean crouches down in front of Cas in the vee of his legs resting his arms on his Cas’ thighs.
“Remember Jo told us about the kid they picked up that she said tested her and reminded her of you?”
Dean’s brow is furrowed at him like he understands where this is leading but not sure yet. “Yeah.”
“There is a reason for that. When I looked at his soul I saw part of yours in his.” Cas takes Dean’s face in his hands and looks him in the eye. “Dean the boy is your son.”
“What? My? What?” Dean looks off into space as if he is checking the catalogues of his brain for possibilities.
“If it helps his name is Ben and I believe that you helped him once before with some changelings.”
Dean’s face falls into recognition but there is also a hint of sadness there. “Ben Braeden, he’s Lisa’s son. Yeah back before Hell. Sammy and I took care of a bunch of Changelings. But Lisa, she said that I wasn’t the father. I asked her right out. I liked the kid, he was brave and cool. I told her that I’d be happy if he was mine but she still said he wasn’t.”
Cas frowns at this. “It appears she was wrong. Maybe she didn’t really know.”
“Or maybe she lied.” Dean chirps in angrily and stands up moving back and turning around as if to hide his emotions from Cas; which is a feeble attempt cause Cas can feel them all whirling through his grace intensely right now..
“That is always a possibility but there is nothing you can do about it now.” He stands and turns Dean around placing a hand on each shoulder. “He’s here alone Dean. He hasn’t mentioned his mother.”
Those words send ice through Dean’s veins as he wonders what happened to Lisa and what kind of horrors Ben has been through. His lungs want to close up as his breath becomes short. He sits down on the edge of the bed again to calm his anxiety which has hit him suddenly after a month without an attack. “Shit Cas. What do I do?”
This time Cas crouches down petting his hand soothingly down Deans chest. “Dean calm down. Breathe. This could be a good thing. You have the opportunity to bond with your son.”
Dean looks scared and starts talking fast. “What if he doesn’t like me Cas? What if he hates me? What if Lisa lied to me, but told him I’m his father and he thinks I’m just a deadbeat dad? What if I am a crappy dad? It isn’t like I had a great role model.”
“Shhh…” Cas stands and pulls Dean into his arms so Dean’s head rests on his chest. Dean wraps his arms around his lover and holds tight as if to ground himself while the panic attempts to consume him. Cas stokes his hands in Dean’s hair. “Dean while there is a possibility of all of that happening I highly doubt it. His soul is pure; not the least bit angry though he is sad. I think that if you reach out to him you will find that he’ll reach back”
Dean stays in his angel’s arms for a few more minutes calming his breathing. Cas just lets him find comfort and continues petting his hair. He finally clears his throat moving to sit back and Cas let him go. “Ok. I’m ready. Let’s go meet my son.”
Cas steps back and lets Dean up. Dean walks to the door and hesitates with his hand on the handle. Cas rests his hand on Dean’s shoulder to comfort him but keeps silent. Dean takes a breath and then pulls open the door walking out into the hallway toward the hospital.
