I don’t own anything from Supernatural they all belong to Kripke & the CW.  I just like to play with their toys.   Thanks to @Maddeh and @AnimeChik27 for being my Alpha and Beta; without them this fic would have driven me crazy and Chitaqua would be spelled wrong a different way every time it is mentioned.  I got the idea & the name of the Fic from Sarah McLaughlin’s song Building a Mystery.  Everything about that song reminds me of 2014 Castiel.  This is written for
dc_dystopia

Make sure to send some love to
tooquickly and

Part Five

Part Six

Cas is up with the rising sun; he gets dressed in the dark cabin and is about ready to walk out the door when it hits him.  He’s scared of going on this mission, not because he’s afraid of getting killed, though with where he’s slated to go that is not a pleasant thought; he’s worried what would happen to Dean.  He can understand why Dean shut his emotions out, everybody he loves is dead and he’s had to stand by and watch it.  He and Dean, all they have left is each other.  He turns around at the door to look at a sleeping Dean and decides to wake him.  Sitting on the side of the bed he leans over and kisses the sleeping man’s lips gently running his hands up and down his torso, fingers just grazing over his nipples.  Dean sighs in his sleep a smile spreading across his face as he reaches out to the man above him peeking open one eye.  “Cas, who knew you were a somnophiliac.” Dean’s voice is groggy, but the playfulness in his tone is without a doubt.

Cas laughs at Dean’s sexual assumption but doesn’t deny it.  “I just wanted to let you know we’re leaving.  Chuck will be by with your breakfast in a while.  I’ll be gone until at least dinner and with any luck we’ll be back with much needed supplies.”

Dean sits up, the blanket pooled at his lap covering the erection that Cas had instigated.  “Promise me you’ll be careful.  No hero shit, ok.  Get in, get out, and come back to camp.”  Come back to me is what he really meant but Dean could never say that out loud.

Cas looks at Dean solemnly.  “I made you a promise a long time ago and I plan on keeping it.  I’m not leaving you any time soon.”  With that said, he kisses Dean and stands up from the bed.  He walks over to the door and with one last glance and a smile he walks out it.

Dean flops back down onto his pillow, his morning wood waning with the worry that Cas would get hurt.  He finds himself curled holding onto the pillow Cas has been using the past two nights, it smells like him, musk and mint and something else that Dean can only describe as the scent the air has just before a snow storm.  He sighs in frustration, since when is he the girl pining over his lover’s scent?  It was so much easier to close it all down and not care but that is a lie too.  Every time Dean saw Cas his heart constricted in his chest knowing that he was the reason for not only Cas’ fall from grace but his immersion in decadence.  That pain became anger and it made him bitter and into someone he couldn’t even recognize as himself anymore.  He hates himself for that.  “Fuck” Dean breathes out as he sits up, any chance of him being able to fall back to sleep shot.  He still doesn’t want to see people so he decides to finish reading and wait for Chuck to bring has breakfast.  Maybe he can convince his former biographer to play a game of cards or something.  With that plan in mind he sits up on the cot with his back against the wall and opens to the page he left off on the night before.

**************

Cas drives Dean’s jeep down the empty street with Tim seated next to him and David in the back.  There are several empty backpacks stacked in the small area that is considered a truck.  Cas has been fairly quiet on the ride but the two men, boys really at the ages of 19 and 20, are brothers so they talk and joke on the 3 hour trip.  The boys banter reminds him of Dean and Sam though the two don’t seem as nearly enmeshed with each other as the Winchesters had been at one point.  Their playful jabs make him smile remembering how much he was confused by the Winchesters calling each other ‘bitch’ and ‘jerk’ but making it a term of endearment instead of an insult.

Knowing to always stick to the back roads, the three men see no signs of trouble on the route to Wausau.  Their first stop they reach around late morning; as they drive up to the prison they all know that this part of the trip is a bust.  “Fuck me.” Cas hears David say from behind him.  The charred remains of what was once the prison, including its population, is all that remains and the stench in the air is stale and grotesque.  They are not sure what happened here and will probably never know, but if Cas had to guess the population got infected and someone thought it better to let it all burn with them inside it rather then risk letting them lose on the streets.  He is not sure he wouldn’t do the same if in that situation.  As an angel he’d not thought twice about erasing whole towns and tribes off the earth under orders so what makes this any different.

They leave the prison in their rear view mirror and continue with the second part of their mission.  The hospital is not that big so the hope is that it hasn’t been worked over too much.  After the outbreak, the first places to get hit were the hospitals; where all the sick people were taken.  So it stands to say that when walking into a hospital they not only have to be on alert but prepared for some truly horrifying imagery.  Cas is used to it, but he feels bad for what the boys under his charge will have to see.

They drive up to the hospital which is deserted and this makes Cas breath easier hoping that they can get in and get out quickly as Dean had asked.  The three men enter the building and begin their search but find that a good portion of the hospitals stock has been picked over.  They manage to get a couple of drug carts open and Cas gives them the list of needed medications that Bonnie wrote out and instructs the boys to take as much as they can in their backpacks while he looks for bandages and suture kits.  He finds some suture kits but not enough and the bandages are all cleared out too. He finds the brothers where he left them as they are zippering up their packs and hoisting them on their shoulders.

“We have to head further into town and see if the pharmacy there has anything left. Someone has already cleared this place out; we still need bandages and antiseptic.   Someone said this is a college town and that they have one of the larger chain pharmacies here.”  Cas says as he takes one final look around.  The boys agree and follow the older man back to the jeep depositing their bags in the truck and taking out the last two empty ones.

The center of town is the typical American small town setting except it is a college town so there are a few more bars along with the chain pharmacy and even a pawn shop/jeweler.  They park a block away and all look at each other as they acknowledge the eerie quiet of this place.  Cas’ grace is swimming inside him making him even more alert.  “Lets make this quick,” he whispers to the boys as they walk toward the store.  The place is dark and luckily it hasn’t been picked over so they begin loading up on bandages, antiseptics.

Tim gives David a questioning look when he sees his big brother grab a pink backpack from a shelf and start stuffing it with feminine products.  David looks at him and shrugs, “Billie was complaining that she has her period last night and asked me to grab some if we could.”  David stuffs a couple of different boxes in as well as a bunch of pain meds that he remembered his last girlfriend taking.

Tim laughs, “Dude you are so whipped.”

David glares at his little brother but then breaks into a smile and reaches for the condoms.  “Well fine, I might be whipped, but at least I’m getting laid.”  He stuffs a few packages of condoms and lube in the bag as well before standing and leaving his brother there still looking after him in awe.

Cas has two more backpacks filled with medical supplies when he meets the boys at the front of the store.  The men are weighed down but they got most of what they came for.  Cas had made sure to grab some soap that he knew Dean liked and on his way past the aisle he too grabbed a couple of bottles of lube which he tucked away in his pocket.  He made note of a bunch of other things in the store that would come in handy for the camp and decided that another tip down here before the move would be a good idea.  Standing at the front of the store, Cas talks in a whisper “We should check out the pawn shop we passed by on our way to the jeep.  I’ll bet they have silver that we can melt down into bullets.”  The boys agree and once again follow Cas out onto the street.

The pawn shop is locked but Cas having been around Dean enough knows how to pick a lock and it doesn’t take him more than a minute to open the door to the store.  The three of them walk into the store and hear a beeping.  The brothers look at each other “Shit” they say in unison and look to Cas who is trying to cross wires on the alarm pad but nothing he is doing is working.  Finally the alarm goes off and the three of them jump.  Cas looks at the boys then throws him his packs and keys.  “You two get to the car and circle around.  I’m going to grab what I can, meet me out front in ten minutes and be careful this place will be swarming with croats soon.”  David grabs Tim and pulls him out the door running to where the jeep is parked a block away.  Cas runs back into the store and grabs anything silver that can be useful as well as a few guns that are on display.  You can never have too many weapons during the apocalypse.  He looks around for ammo but doesn’t see any and curses at the fact.  The first croat comes running in and Cas doesn’t hesitate to put a bullet in his head his aim perfect, either from his angelic side or Dean’s training it doesn’t really matter at this point.

The boys make it back to the jeep and throw their pack into the back.  David slides behind the wheel and starts it up noticing a group of croats running toward them.  He pulls the jeep around and drives back toward the pawn shop and Cas.  As they get closer they can hear Cas firing his weapons and once close enough Tim starts shooting the dozen or so Croats that are gathered around the entrance of the store.  Tim is not a very good shot but he’s trying; the two in the back have fallen down.  David is trying to keep the Jeep moving so the croats don’t have a chance to attack them; that only adds to Tim’s aiming issue.

Inside the pawn shop, Cas sees the Jeep drive by and can hear someone firing and is glad for the back up.  Some of the croats that are at the door turn around and start for the jeep which is good for him if he wants to get out but he hope the boys know to keep it moving.  He shoots a couple of more croats in the doorway before closing the door on them locking it.  The alarm is still sounding and is hurting his ears but he runs to get his pack which he dropped toward the back of the shop.  He reaches into his pocket and pulls out his last clip which only carries 12 rounds.  ‘Fuck’ he thinks as he looks around the shop again hoping to find ammo, but knowing he won’t.  He stands and pulls his backpack on his shoulder and walks to the front.  The jeep is gone, but so are most of the croats leaving two left still banging on the door trying to break through.

Cas hears several gunshots and the two croats at the door drop to the ground.  Tim is standing there, Cas quickly moves to open the door letting him in. “Hey need some help?” The younger man asks with a cheeky grin.

Cas can’t help but give a laugh at that.  “Gee you think?”  He responds back sarcastically but smiling.  Tim walks in and Cas closes it behind him again locking it before crouching down out of sight.  “Where’s your brother gone off too?”

“He dropped me off and is trying to get the croats to follow him so you could get out of here.  We figured you were boxed in.  We need to make a run for it and meet him up the block.”

Cas looks at the boy impressed by his and his brothers plan and ability to think on their feet.  They will make good soldiers once they are fully trained.  “How are you on ammo?”

The boy looks at his gun pulling out his clip.  “Got four left how about you?”

“I’m on my last clip.  Why don’t you take it?  I’m a better shot then you, which just so you know we are going to fix once we get back to camp.  Give me yours.”  The men switch guns and stand up.  They can hear the jeeps horn beeping signaling that David is on his way back.  Cas looks over and sees a katana inside a glass case at the counter.  He looks back at his gun and then slams the butt of it through the glass shattering it.

Tim jumps and turns back to Cas. “What the fuck?”

Cas reaches in the case and pulls out the katana examining it closer.  The blade is full tang and grooved in a way that tells him it is hand made and better yet sharp.  He checks the balance of it quickly and looks at the questioning boy.  “I was always better with a blade anyway.  Figure this could come in handy when we run out of ammo which with your shooting is going to be sooner then later.”

The boy scoffs at the comment then leans out the door.  “The street is clear; David should be back any minute.”

Cas slides the backpack over both arms and fastens the belt around his waist to secure the heavy bag.  He was luck enough to find several pieces made of silver, including a serving tray; which are all tucked into his backpack.  He moves behind Tim and peers out the door.  “Ok let’s go, where are we meeting him?”

“Back at the pharmacy, he’s circling the block to give us time to get over there.”

Cas moves in front of the boy.  “Save your bullets until they are close enough you can hit them.  Let me do the rest.”  Cas runs across the street and Tim follows; the two men hide behind a car for a moment listening for the jeep which they can hear driving down the next block.

Behind them a half dozen croats come out of nowhere and spot them.  Cas shoots right away the four he hits falling to the ground, but the others charge them and two more come out of another building having heard the shots.  David is still a couple of hundred yards away; the croats will be to them first.  Cas takes off the pack handing it to Tim. “Don’t shoot me.”  He unsheathes the katana and calmly walks toward the croats.  The first croat to get to him he runs through, the metal like a warm knife cutting butter.  Cas kicks the croat back and swings the sword chopping the next one in half horizontally the body parts landing making two separate slopping noises.  Cas handles the sword like it is an extension of his body; even though it is longer then his angel blade it is still the form of fighting he is most comfortable with and when the next two croats get to him he dispatches them in the same manner easily.  The next croat to come at him has a baseball bat and swings it at Cas making him jump back giving him time to duck just before the next swing, which is aimed at his head.  Cas uppercuts with the sword, stabbing the blade through the infected man’s chest cavity.  Cas is breathing heavy and sighs in relief that he didn’t meet his end thanks to Louisville Slugger when a gunshot rings out causing him to look up just in time to see the last croat of the group falling dead.  He looks behind him and sees David with his rifle.  He nods to the boy in thanks and stands.  Decidedly he likes the katana so he removes it from the dead croat’s chest, wipes the blood from the blade on the nearest croats shirt and sheathes it before running over to the jeep and hopping into the passengers side.  David puts the car in gear and speeds off before the rest of the croats arrive.
