London Bridge

Apr 06, 2005 03:56

Well, after my lovely bath, which wasn't near as lovely as a bath back home will be, but got me clean, and getting changed, we finally headed for London Bridge. I've been quiet. It's feeling weird even to me, but I just have a lot on my mind. There's all these stupid thoughts keep going through my head. About London, about home...about everyone ( Read more... )

The first thing I think when everything goes all glittery is "Score! The orb actually works!"

The next thing, when Anya drags us all flat on our faces, this sure as hell better not be Sunnydale. Of course it has to go to hell while I'm out of town. But then I realize we're on a ship and nowhere near our destination.

"Uh, this isn't exactly home, Cordy," I grunt.

I gasp. "REALLY Buffy? My god, you're so perceptive!" I glare. "What, it's not like I tried it! And I'm still holding on...I didn't actually do anything the first time!" I snap, but mostly to be heard over the next cannonball blast. Lovely. It works but it's got a shitty sense of time. I shake it, wondering if that'll help. "C'mon, stupid thing...get us out of here..."

More glittery effect, and the rocking motion of the ship is gone...but dammit, not the gunpowder smell. I'm still on my stomach, and I can still feel Anya's hand on my back. The glitter clears, and I look up to see we're in the middle of some freaking field and omigod, even without the gunpowder it smells worse than London did. I turn my head and find out why...dead horse, deader rider lying next to me. The rider's in a tattered gray uniform.

Instinctively I roll away and flip to my feet. "Geez, what's wrong with that stupid orb?" I ask Cordy. "Needs an instruction manual or something..."

A barrage of gunshots ring out and I squat. "Um, maybe it's how you turn it or something? Like, veer to the left and you go forward in time?" I'm grasping at straws, but that's about all there is.

I look around. "I think this is forward from where we were..." I say, pinching my nose shut so I don't retch. Then I give Buffy a Look. "Buffy! Stay close, I don't know when this stupid thing's going to go off, don't go back flipping around and get left someplace in time, because I wouldn't know how to get you back!"

"Good point," I admit. Who knows how the thing works? But yeah, as I look around, I'm seeing a bunch of guys in navy blue charging the hill. "Oh, shit. Civil war? Right? Blue and gray?" I look back and forth between Anya and Cordy, hoping they agree with my really lame assessment.

"Hate to point this out, but a war zone is a war zone - I've seen enough of them in my time to know that. Not a good place to be..." I trail off as I notice the men around us - those of them who are still standing, that is - start to realise there are suddenly three women on the battlefield. "Really not a good place to be!"

"Yeah, I second that," I say. I duck as another volley of shots rings out on the field, laying a hand on Cordelia's shoulder for balance. "If you can't find home, can you at least take us somewhere we're not getting shot at and where I could maybe take a bath?" I'm only half joking about the last part. The itchiness is starting to drive me batty.

"Yeah, I'll get right on that...it's not like I know how to get it to--" I pause as the glitter starts up again. "Oh well that's better."

"It really is not unlike teleportation, though whoever created it obviously had a flair for the overdramatic - the glitter is a touch too far," I muse as we find ourselves on a cobbled street, in the middle of a crowd of people. "Defnintely an improvement," I say, turning to Cordelia. "Though Sunnydale would have been nice." Though, having said that, the crowd we're in don't look too happy at the moment...

I look around. "....yeah. Cheery bunch." I say, arching an eyebrow at our surroundings. "Sunnydale, Sunnydale....are we jumping randomly?" I ask, glancing between the other two to see if they've got a clue about pattern here.

"I'm not sure," I say, jumping out of the way before I'm knocked over by several angry men rushing by. "Whew, definitely still in the days before bathing came into fashion, and I don't see any electricity or cars or stuff. Anya's the history expert."

"Well, from the accents I'd say Scotland and the clothes are definitely early eighteenth century," I say, before turning to Cordy. "That means you sent us backwards! And further away - can't you control that thing?"

"Obviously not." I say, sighing. "C'mon you stupid thing, Sunnydale we need to be in Sunnydale!"

I look up as the glitter effect starts again, hoping we get to the right place this time. Sunnydale, home sweet hellmouth...

I look around at a darkened street, lamp posts lining the road, and there's some chick standing a few feet away carrying a crossbow, staring at us. She looks greatly unamused.

"So, war, war, angry mob, girl with crossbow - any chance of us landing somewhere that doesn't involve a potentially life threatening situation?" I ask out of the corner of my mouth as the girl just stares at us. "What?" I ask her, irritably.
