So. This weekend I will be following up my big paddleboard adventure with another one.

Solo camping.

Well, sort of. More like "solo camping but with training wheels." I'll be joining the kayak club on a pilgrimage across to Governors' Island for the day Saturday, as part of New York's City Of Water Day, meant to promote the use of New York's waterways. We'll be paddling over at about 10 in the morning, and signed up for a permit to pitch tents and stay overnight on Saturday. Alongside the big "yay come look at how to do boats" stuff they've got on deck (as well as, inexplicably, tango lessons), they'll also have a roster of regular stuff on Governors' Island, and shogunsquirrel was talking about coming out for that so we'll probably meet up and go off playing minigolf instead for a while. And as for the food, there also appears to be a kasquillion food carts, and a bar besides.

But that still means I need to bring things like....a tent. A sleeping bag. Towel. Something for breakfast. Soap. Plumbing.

Um.

Fortunately, Colin and Niki loaned me one of their tents they haven't used in years -- I'm going to attempt to set the thing up tomorrow night to see if I can figure out what the hell I'm doing. Their tent was missing stakes, so I had to make a pilgrimage to a camping supply store -- where I also spent about an hour walking around in a bewildered, vaguely anxious daze, trying to figure out whether I should bring other things (a lantern? Okay, yeah, for reading myself to sleep...a flashlight? No, I had a couple from backstage...towel? Bug spray? Oh dear.)

I'm going to have to go back again -- the only backpack I have turns out to be for snowboarding, and isn't anywhere near big enough to hold my sleeping bag and the tent AND everything else. I also resisted getting lots of gadgets -- but I did get two fun toys; a camp shower (fill it with water and let it sit in the sun, and voila, hot shower), and....another bathing and hygiene product that I will probably not be able to use without singing King Missle.
