Summary: At Kris and Katy's anniversary party, they make a proposal to Adam so everyone can finally get a chance at the happiness they deserve.
Two years. It has been two years since Kris stood on the bank of the river and was blessed with Katy to become husband and wife. He smiled at the memory now, spinning her around the dance floor at their anniversary party. Katy laughed and smiled and barely caught herself from crashing into Kris's chest, her hands spread wide between them.
"I love you," Kris whispered into her ear. Katy tucked her face against his neck, the soft strands of her hair tickling his cheek. Having her in his arms brought Kris more peace than he could describe with words and squeezed her tightly. Kris knew there was no way he could ever be without her, even if she was not the only one he loved.
Kris heard a small crash behind him and turned to see Adam accidentally overturning a chair as he stood up to leave. He saw Adam stumble into the house; Adam had obviously had too much to drink. Kris thought about going after him to check on him, but he decided to give him a few moments first. Another slow song started and Kris pulled Katy close again. "I'm going to go check on Adam after this song. He's drunk, and I think he's upset."
Katy tilted her face up, brow creased with worry. "I think being here might be harder on Adam than he likes to let on. You know how much he likes to put up a front when it comes to relationships. He always plays off his break ups as ‘no big deal,' but really it's killing him that he hasn't found someone."
"Yeah, I know. I talked to him a few weeks ago about this. I think he's started to give up on finding someone. He doesn't deserve that," Kris said, and then at nearly a whisper, he continued, "I miss him. I still love him so much, but I still don't think he knows that I love him as much as I do."
Katy paused and Kris sucked in a deep breath. They'd had this conversation before, too many times to count, and he knew what was coming. "I know you do, sweetie. I love him too, but I still don't know how he would feel about the situation. And you keep putting that conversation off."
"I still think it would be unfair to you."
Katy sighed. "Kris, I want you happy. I want Adam happy. I love you both," Katy whispered in Kris's ear and pressed a kiss to his neck. "I know how I feel about it. I'd be happy to share you with someone I love. The rest is on you two."
Kris kissed her gently at first before deepening his kiss a little. After a moment, he realized they were in the middle of the dance floor so he broke the kiss and blushed when he saw several people staring. Katy laughed.
"Oh, shut up. It's my family. You get the same way when we're around your parents." Kris said. Katy rose up and pressed a quick peck against his lips, then pinched his ass. Really, his wife was evil. "Now you're just being mean."
"You love it," Katy said, and grabbed for his hand. "And it's adorable when you blush. But maybe we should go check on Adam now? He hasn't come back yet."
Kris tangled his fingers with Katy's, following as she led him off of the dance floor. They got a few hoots and hollers from Kris's friends thinking they were leaving to finish their kissing, but they just ignored them as they went into the house.
"Where do you think he went?" Kris said.
"He's probably in the bathroom if he's been drinking too much. You go check and I'll grab a bottle of water and some crackers for his stomach from the kitchen."
Kris walked down the hall to check the guest bathroom. It was completely empty so he went to check the main bathroom that was off the living room, but still no Adam. The only other bathroom was his and Katy's master bath that adjoined their bedroom. He walked back to the kitchen to get Katy before checking there, though. He wanted her at his side so Adam would understand how serious they were.
Katy was leaning against the counter, a bottle of water in one hand and a sleeve of crackers in the other. She had put on a pot of coffee as well and when Kris walked in, she glanced up.
"Did you find him?"
"Not yet, but I think he might be in the master bath. He wasn't in either of the others."
Katy nodded, a reassuring smile on her face, and followed Kris as he continued into their bedroom.
"Adam?" Kris called out, "Are you in here?"
As Kris got closer to the bathroom, he heard the faucet start and someone fumbling around. The door wasn't closed completely, but he still knocked before walking right in.
"Adam, are you okay?"
Adam's eyeliner was smudged, his jacket was crumpled on the floor in a heap, and he looked a little drained. "Yeah, I'm fine. I just drank too much," Adam said from his seat on the edge of the bathtub, his voice a little ragged from either throwing up or crying. Kris wasn't sure.
"Come sit in the bedroom. Maybe if you lie down..." Kris said. He laid his palm between Adam's shoulder blades and coaxed him into the bedroom.
"I have some water and saltines for you if you need them," Katy said. Adam put on a weak smile and thanked her quietly, taking a seat next to her at the foot of the bed. He uncapped the water with shaking hands.
"Are you sure it's just the alcohol?" Katy asked. She brushed the fringe of Adam's hair to the side, trying to read his eyes. "You can talk to us. We're here for you if you need to talk."
"There is more, but I don't really want to talk about it right now. Not tonight, it's your anniversary." Katy put her arm around him and Adam flinched at her touch. She dropped her hand instantly. "Katy, I'm sorry. It's not you. There's just so much. I don't even know how to start."
Katy cleared her throat and looked up at Kris as she tried to get him to speak up. Kris was standing a few feet away biting his lip in anticipation of the coming conversation.
"It's just…it's supposed to be a celebration and you are clearly not in a celebratory mood. You didn't even dance. You love dancing," Kris said.
From the bedroom, they could hear the music starting again now that the band had had a break. Kris grabbed Adam's hand and pulled him into the center of the room.
"Would you at least dance with me in here?" Kris said as he placed his hands around Adam's shoulders.
"Kris," Adam protested.
"Oh, come on, I'm only asking for one dance," Kris said as he began to move to the music.
After a few moments, Adam relaxed into the dance and even smiled. Kris rested his head against Adam's chest and held tight around his shoulders. Adam wrapped his arms around Kris's waist and Kris just sunk into his embrace. Kris felt unbelievably safe and happy. This closeness with Adam was something he had been wanting for so long. He pulled back to look up at Adam, but Adam was looking over at Katy, who was still sitting on the bed. She smiled at him, and Adam suddenly stopped dancing.
"Kris, you should be dancing with Katy. It's your anniversary. You don't need to dance with me."
Kris took a deep breath. It was now or never, and he met Katy's eyes over Adam's shoulder. She nodded, eyes bright and shining.
"It is mine and Katy's anniversary," Kris said. He slid his fingers through Adam's, bringing their joined hands up. He brushed his lips against the backs of Adam's knuckles, then raised his eyes to meet Adam's. "But it could be our anniversary."
"I don't understand. What do you mean it could be our anniversary? What about you and Katy?"
"When I say our I mean you, me, and Katy. I mean...it could be the three of us."
Adam looked over at Katy; she was nodding along with what Kris was saying. Katy stood up and crossed the space between them to wrap her fingers around where Adam's hand was already laced with Kris's.
"We love you, Adam. I think Kris loves you a little more and in a different way, but I think that's because he knows or at least feels that you love him back. I want us all to be happy. I know I won't be happy without Kris, but I also know that he won't be truly happy without you too, and from what I have seen, you were the happiest I have ever seen you when you and Kris were still living together and always around each other."
"I, uh, but…" Adam's fingers flexed beneath Kris's, his unease blatant. Kris hated it, but held on, biting his lip and letting Katy continue.
"Adam, I am not expecting anything from you. I know I am not exactly your type." Katy laughed a little. "As long as I have Kris, I will be perfectly happy. I am content and lucky to be able to share him if you'll let me." Katy squeezed Adam's hand and mimicked Kris's early movement, kissing the lines of their fingers where they crossed. "I love you, Adam. We love you. Please think about what we are suggesting." Katy let go of their hands and leaned over to give Kris a chaste kiss on the lips. "I love you. I'm going to leave you two alone now and go back to the party. Don't be long. I want us all to celebrate together."
Once they were alone, Adam finally came out of shock, released Kris's hands, and began talking in coherent sentences. "Kris, am I understanding correctly or has the champagne really gotten to me?"
"You're understanding correctly, unless you're just completely stupid," Kris joked, trying to lighten the mood a little.
"No, but seriously, how is this not a dream? This is so surreal; I'm not even sure how to react." Adam said as he gripped Kris's arms.
Kris reached up to brush Adam's bangs out of his eyes. "I don't know if I am straight or if I was ever straight, but I know I do love you. I more than love you; I am in love with you. I am in love with both you and Katy, and I guess I'm just greedy because I don't want to give either of you up. Can you deal with that?" Kris slid his palm across the back of Adam's neck and pulled him closer so that their foreheads were touching, "Please say yes, please."
Kris kissed him, chaste and gentle at first then sucked gently on Adam's bottom lip. As they continued their kiss and all of their pent up emotions took over, the kiss intensified, each of them fighting for dominance. They had both waited so long for this. Adam tugged on Kris's lip with his teeth making Kris moan and push Adam back towards the bed.
When Adam's legs bumped into the foot of the bed, he stopped their kiss. "Kris, we can't." Kris started kissing Adam's neck, ignoring the way Adam batted at Kris's arms, trying to push him away. Without much effort, if you asked him. "Kris, stop. We have to go back to the party. We will have time later for all of this. We'll have time later when Katy is here with us."
Kris pulled away. He knew Adam was right, but still…
"So your answer is definitely yes?" Kris asked expectantly.
Adam smiled weakly, the initial high wearing off and the weight of the situation finally sinking in. "I'm saying I want to try. It's not going to be easy."
Kris's smile faded slightly. "Adam, I'm married. I know it's not going to be easy. No relationships are easy, but when they are worth it, you make it work."
"I know. That is what I'm saying. I want to make this work and I know it's not going to be easy for any of us." Adam kissed Kris again, on the lips and several along his jaw as he wove his fingers with Kris's. "Let's go find Katy and celebrate at the party," Adam murmured. "And later the three of us can celebrate in here," he added, nipping Kris on the throat before pulling him towards the door.
