Tit for tat, m'dear. At least that's what Mere's saying. Why she can't post this under her name instead of mine is not worth questioning she says. She would also like to hit Alex upside the head for being a douche bag and give him a great big hug afterwards.
Anyways, on with the story based from the chat on Saturday. (And we're both available on Thursdays.)
Jenna and Rachel are both awaiting Annika when she arrives at their customary table. When she is sitting down at the table, Jenna turns to Rachel.
"You owe me fifty bucks," she says simply. Rachel's jaw, in response, drops in shock.
"You're kidding!" she manages to get out.
"Saw it last night."
By now Annika's added two plus two and doesn't know what to feel at this. "You two bet fifty bucks on whether or not Alex and I are dating!" Belatedly realizing that calling him by his first name is a dead give away along with Jenna's evidence, she clasps her hands over her mouth as Rachel and Jenna give her a look.
"Well yeah. It was only a matter of time." Jenna explains as if it should have been obvious after taking a sip of her soda. "Rachel thought you two wouldn't admit that you're crazy in love with each other."
That has the effect that Jenna is going for, Annika's attention is now on Rachel.
"Rachel!" Annika exclaims again. Rachel moves her arms in a 'eh' motion.
"Annika, we both know how dedicated you are to your job and that code of ethics that you adhere to. That's why I thought you and Mr. Howell wouldn't get together - interoffice dating, especially boss/employee - would be a definite no in your book. Add to that fact that I'm still not convinced that he's entirely human." Rachel smiles at that last sentence and squeezes Annika's hand. "But he is showing remarkably good taste in girlfriends."
Partially mollified at that, Annika turns her attention back to Jenna. "Why did you bet?"
"Because I knew that the two of you would work it out. I didn't observe you eight plus hours, five days a week for nothing. Besides this is me we're talking about. I'm the one who asked my boss if he was dating his former assistant in former assistant's kitchen while in my underwear and holding two bottles of wine." Annika drops her head into her hands, remembering the convincing that she need to do with Alex and the job she had with Jenna to get her out of the kitchen. At the end of Jenna's explanation, Rachel starts laughing.
"Only you, Jenna." Rachel lets out in between laughing.
"I didn't know he was there!" Jenna says and proceeds to explain to Rachel why she was just wearing a bra and panties and holding two bottles of wine. "...so I showed up at Annika's, put my stuff in her dryer and walked out to see Annika and Mr. Howell engaging in a more than friendly former boss-employee kiss."
Rachel snorts in amusement before focusing her attention at Annika, tipping her head slightly.
"What made you decide to do this?" Rachel's voice is quiet, calm. It's a tone of voice that she hasn't used on Annika, but it was the precursor to the fall of Luke Grey's company, Ind Ext, and the flurry of federal indictments that brought and followed the fall.
Annika's ready for this, she knows that the question was coming when Jenna told Rachel.
She tells them of how Alex showed up drunk on her doorstep, what he said to her when he was at her apartment, and the fallout from one little sentence.
Jenna's sniffling at the end and Rachel's digging in her purse for tissues for all three while Annika has a small, sad smile on her face. Deciding that the proceedings need to be lightened up, Rachel lets a wicked smile slowly come onto her face before continuing in the same voice.
"How is the sex?"
A loud groan from Jenna proceeds her sticking her tongue out at Rachel and Annika smiles.
"It's good...it's really, really good."
"Waiter!" Jenna raises her arm and guides one over to her table. "I need a shot of tequila." As the waiter moves off, she shoots Rachel and Annika a dirty look.
"Since there's no such thing as mind bleach for that question and that answer, one of you is paying for my shot." Downing it as soon as the waiter sets it down, she motions for another one.
"I have to work with him! I can't deal with imaging how he is in bed! And this is my last mind bleach alternative because I can't get drunk tonight because James' an idiot and I have to be in by seven!" Finishing off her second shot on Annika and Rachel's laughter, she sets the glass down and gives Annika a hug over the laughter.
"Everything aside, I am really happy for you. You deserve it."
"Jenna..." Annika says, visibly touched. This has Rachel handing Annika another tissue and a few moments of silence descend over the table.
"The Nanny Diaries are playing at 7:45 at Regal." Annika breaks the silence.
"I vote we go see that." Rachel says. Jenna agrees and the three leave the restaurant, the main topic of choice of conversation being the new relationship between Annika and Alex.
